1. 이제 이 일은 아하수에로 시대에 있던 일인데 (이 아하수에로는 인도에서부터 에티오피아에 이르기까지 백스물일곱 지방을 통치한 자더라.) 1. Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus, (this is Ahasuerus which reigned, from India even unto Ethiopia, over an hundred and seven and twenty provinces:)
2. 그 당시에 아하수에로 왕이 수산 궁에서 자신의 왕국의 왕좌에 앉았고 2. That in those days, when the king Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the palace,
3. 자신의 통치 제삼년에 자신의 모든 통치자와 신하들을 위하여 잔치를 베풀매 페르시아와 메대의 권력자들 곧 지방들의 고귀한 자들과 통치자들이 그 앞에 있더라. 3. In the third year of his reign, he made a feast unto all his princes and his servants; the power of Persia and Media, the nobles and princes of the provinces, being before him:
4. 그가 여러 날 곧 백팔십 일 동안 자신의 영화로운 왕국의 부요함과 자신의 뛰어난 위엄의 존귀를 과시하니라. 4. When he shewed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honour of his excellent majesty many days, even an hundred and fourscore days.
5. 이 날들이 끝나매 왕이 또 큰 자든 작은 자든 수산 궁에 있던 온 백성을 위하여 왕궁의 정원 뜰에서 이레 동안 잔치를 베풀었더라. 5. And when these days were expired, the king made a feast unto all the people that were present in Shushan the palace, both unto great and small, seven days, in the court of the garden of the king's palace;
6. 거기에는 고운 아마 줄과 자주색 줄로 은고리와 대리석 기둥들에 붙들어 맨 흰색, 녹색, 청색 현수막들이 있었으며 또 붉은색, 청색, 흰색, 검은색 및 대리석으로 포장한 곳 위에 금과 은으로 만든 침상들도 있었더라. 6. Where were white, green, and blue, hangings, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble: the beds were of gold and silver, upon a pavement of red, and blue, and white, and black, marble.
7. 그들이 또한 저들에게 금으로 된 그릇들에 마실 것을 주었는데 (이 그릇들은 서로 생김새가 다르고) 또 왕의 형편대로 주는 왕의 포도주가 풍부하였더라. 7. And they gave them drink in vessels of gold, (the vessels being diverse one from another,) and royal wine in abundance, according to the state of the king.
8. 또 마시는 것도 법에 따라 하게 하되 아무도 억지로 하게 하지 아니하였으니 왕이 자기 집의 모든 직무 수행자에게 그렇게 지정하여 그들이 각 사람이 기뻐하는 대로 행하게 하였더라. 8. And the drinking was according to the law; none did compel: for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house, that they should do according to every man's pleasure.
9. 왕비 와스디도 아하수에로 왕에게 속한 왕의 집에서 여인들을 위하여 잔치를 베푸니라. 9. Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged to king Ahasuerus.
10. ¶ 일곱째 날에 왕의 마음이 포도주로 인하여 즐거워졌을 때에 아하수에로 왕이 자기 앞에서 섬기는 일곱 명의 시종장 곧 므후만과 비스다와 하르보나와 빅다와 아박다와 세달과 가르가스에게 명령하여 10. ¶ On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven chamberlains that served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king,
11. 왕비의 관을 쓴 왕비 와스디를 왕 앞으로 데려다가 그녀의 아리따움을 백성과 통치자들에게 보여 주게 하였으니 그녀는 보기에 아름다웠더라. 11. To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to shew the people and the princes her beauty: for she was fair to look on.
12. 그러나 왕비 와스디가 왕의 시종장들이 집행하는 왕의 명령대로 오기를 거부하므로 왕이 심히 노하여 그의 속에서 그의 분노가 불붙었더라. 12. But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king's commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.
13. ¶ 그때에 왕이 때를 아는 지혜자들에게 말하되, (법과 재판을 아는 모든 자들을 향한 왕의 관례가 그러하였더라. 13. ¶ Then the king said to the wise men, which knew the times, (for so was the king's manner toward all that knew law and judgment:
14. 또 왕 다음으로는 페르시아와 메대의 일곱 통치자 곧 가르스나와 세다르와 아드마다와 다시스와 메레스와 마르스나와 므무간이 있었는데 이들은 왕의 얼굴을 보며 왕국에서 첫째가는 자리에 앉은 자들이더라.) 14. And the next unto him was Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, which saw the king's face, and which sat the first in the kingdom;)
15. 왕비 와스디가 시종장들이 집행하는 아하수에로 왕의 명령을 이행하지 아니하였으니 법에 따라 우리가 그녀에게 무엇을 하랴? 하매 15. What shall we do unto the queen Vashti according to law, because she hath not performed the commandment of the king Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?
16. 므무간이 왕과 통치자들 앞에서 대답하여 이르되, 왕비 와스디가 왕에게만 잘못한 것이 아니라 아하수에로 왕에게 속한 모든 지방의 모든 통치자와 모든 백성에게도 잘못하였나이다. 16. And Memucan answered before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen hath not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that are in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus.
17. 왕비가 행한 이 일 곧 아하수에로 왕이 명령하여 왕비 와스디를 왕 앞으로 오게 하였으나 그녀가 오지 아니하였다 하는 일이 모든 여인에게 널리 퍼져 알려지면 그들이 자기 눈으로 자기 남편을 멸시하리이다. 17. For this deed of the queen shall come abroad unto all women, so that they shall despise their husbands in their eyes, when it shall be reported, The king Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she came not.
18. 마찬가지로 왕비의 행동에 관하여 들은 페르시아와 메대의 귀부인들이 이 날에 왕의 모든 통치자에게 말하리니 이로써 멸시와 진노가 너무 많이 일어나리이다. 18. Likewise shall the ladies of Persia and Media say this day unto all the king's princes, which have heard of the deed of the queen. Thus shall there arise too much contempt and wrath.
19. 왕이 만일 기쁘게 여기실진대 와스디가 다시는 아하수에로 왕 앞에 오지 못하게 하는 왕의 명령을 내리시고 페르시아 사람들과 메대 사람들의 법 가운데 그것을 기록하여 변개하지 못하게 하시며 또 왕께서는 그녀가 차지한 왕비의 지위를 그녀보다 더 나은 다른 여인에게 주소서. 19. If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.
20. 왕께서 내리실 왕의 칙령이 왕의 온 제국에 두루 알려지게 되면 (이 제국이 광대하므로) 모든 아내들이 자기 남편이 큰 자든 작은 자든 다 존경하리이다, 하매 20. And when the king's decree which he shall make shall be published throughout all his empire, (for it is great,) all the wives shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and small.
21. 왕과 통치자들이 그 말을 기쁘게 여기므로 왕이 므무간의 말대로 행하였으니 21. And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and the king did according to the word of Memucan:
22. 왕이 자기의 모든 지방에 편지를 보내되 각 지방의 글에 따라 각 지방으로, 각 백성에게 그들의 말대로 보내어 모든 남자가 자기 집을 다스리게 하고 또 모든 백성의 말로 그것을 널리 알리게 하였더라. 22. For he sent letters into all the king's provinces, into every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language, that every man should bear rule in his own house, and that it should be published according to the language of every people.
1. 이 일들 뒤에 아하수에로 왕의 진노가 가라앉으매 왕이 와스디와 그녀가 행한 일과 그녀를 치려고 칙령을 내린 것을 기억하거늘 1. After these things, when the wrath of king Ahasuerus was appeased, he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed against her.
2. 그때에 왕을 섬기는 왕의 신하들이 아뢰기를, 왕을 위하여 아리따운 처녀들을 구하게 하시되 2. Then said the king's servants that ministered unto him, Let there be fair young virgins sought for the king:
3. 왕의 왕국의 모든 지방에 왕께서 직무 수행자들을 임명하시어 그들이 아리따운 모든 젊은 처녀들을 수산 궁으로 함께 모아 여인들의 집으로 데려다가 여인들을 지키는 자 곧 왕의 시종장 헤개의 보호를 받게 하며 또 정결하게 할 물품을 그들에게 주게 하시고 3. And let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather together all the fair young virgins unto Shushan the palace, to the house of the women, unto the custody of Hege the king's chamberlain, keeper of the women; and let their things for purification be given them:
4. 와스디 대신 왕을 기쁘게 하는 처녀를 왕비로 삼으소서, 하매 왕이 그것을 기쁘게 여겨 그대로 행하니라. 4. And let the maiden which pleaseth the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so.
5. ¶ 이제 수산 궁에 모르드개라는 이름의 어떤 유대인이 있었는데 그는 베냐민 족속으로 야일의 아들이요, 시므이의 손자요, 기스의 증손이더라. 5. ¶ Now in Shushan the palace there was a certain Jew, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite;
6. 이 사람이 전에 유다 왕 여고니야와 함께 사로잡혀 간 포로들 곧 바빌론 왕 느부갓네살이 사로잡아 간 자들과 더불어 예루살렘에서 사로잡혀 갔더라. 6. Who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captivity which had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.
7. 그가 자기 삼촌의 딸 하닷사 곧 에스더를 양육하였으니 그녀에게는 아버지나 어머니가 없었더라. 그 처녀는 용모가 곱고 아름답더라. 그녀의 아버지와 어머니가 죽은 뒤에 모르드개가 그녀를 자기 딸로 삼았더라. 7. And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle's daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid was fair and beautiful; whom Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.
8. ¶ 이처럼 왕의 명령과 그의 칙령을 듣고 많은 처녀들이 수산 궁에 함께 모여 헤개의 보호를 받을 때에 에스더도 인도를 받아 왕의 집에 이르러 여인들을 지키는 자 헤개의 보호를 받더라. 8. ¶ So it came to pass, when the king's commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the palace, to the custody of Hegai, that Esther was brought also unto the king's house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.
9. 그 처녀가 그를 기쁘게 하므로 그의 친절을 얻으니라. 그가 곧바로 정결하게 할 물품과 그녀에게 속한 물건들을 주며 또 왕의 집에서 마땅히 그녀에게 주어야 할 일곱 명의 시녀를 주고 그녀와 그녀의 시녀들을 택하여 여인들의 집에서 가장 좋은 곳으로 데려가니라. 9. And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her things for purification, with such things as belonged to her, and seven maidens, which were meet to be given her, out of the king's house: and he preferred her and her maids unto the best place of the house of the women.
10. 에스더가 자기의 백성과 친족을 알리지 아니하였으니 모르드개가 그녀에게 명하여 그녀가 그것을 알리지 못하게 하였더라. 10. Esther had not shewed her people nor her kindred: for Mordecai had charged her that she should not shew it.
11. 모르드개가 날마다 여인들의 집의 뜰 앞을 거닐며 에스더가 어떻게 행하는지 또 어떻게 될 것인지 알고자 하였더라. 11. And Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women's house, to know how Esther did, and what should become of her.
12. ¶ 이제 처녀마다 여인들의 관례대로 열두 달을 지낸 뒤에 순서가 되어 아하수에로 왕에게 들어갔으니 (그들이 여섯 달 동안 몰약 기름을 쓰고 여섯 달 동안 향수와 여인들을 정결하게 하는 데 필요한 다른 물품을 써서 그렇게 몸을 정결하게 하는 기간을 채웠더라.) 12. ¶ Now when every maid's turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the purifying of the women;)
13. 이같이 각 처녀가 왕에게 갈 때에는 그녀가 무엇을 요구하든지 다 그녀에게 주어 여인들의 집에서 왕의 집으로 가지고 가게 하였더라. 13. Then thus came every maiden unto the king; whatsoever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women unto the king's house.
14. 저녁에 그녀가 갔다가 다음 날 여인들의 둘째 집으로 돌아와 후궁들을 보살피는 왕의 시종장 사아스가스의 보호를 받았는데 왕이 그녀를 기쁘게 여겨 이름으로 그녀를 부르지 아니하면 그녀가 다시는 왕에게 들어가지 못하였더라. 14. In the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king's chamberlain, which kept the concubines: she came in unto the king no more, except the king delighted in her, and that she were called by name.
15. ¶ 이제 모르드개의 삼촌 아비하일의 딸 곧 모르드개가 자기 딸로 취한 에스더가 순서가 되어 왕에게 들어갈 때에 여인들을 지키는 자 즉 왕의 시종장 헤개가 정해 준 것 외에는 다른 것을 요구하지 아니하였더라. 에스더가 그녀를 바라보는 모든 사람의 눈앞에서 호의를 입었더라. 15. ¶ Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king's chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained favour in the sight of all them that looked upon her.
16. 이처럼 아하수에로 왕의 통치 제칠년 시월 곧 데벳 월에 에스더가 이끌려 왕의 집에 들어가 왕에게 나아가니 16. So Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house royal in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.
17. 왕이 모든 여인보다 에스더를 더욱 사랑하므로 그녀가 모든 처녀보다 왕의 눈앞에서 은혜와 호의를 더 많이 입으니라. 이에 그가 그녀의 머리에 왕비의 관을 씌우고 그녀를 와스디 대신 왕비로 삼으며 17. And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.
18. 그때에 자기의 모든 통치자들과 신하들에게 큰 잔치 곧 에스더를 위한 잔치를 베풀었더라. 왕이 또 지방들에게 면제를 명하고 왕의 형편대로 선물을 주니라. 18. Then the king made a great feast unto all his princes and his servants, even Esther's feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave gifts, according to the state of the king.
19. 처녀들을 두 번째 함께 모을 때에 모르드개가 왕의 문에 앉았더라. 19. And when the virgins were gathered together the second time, then Mordecai sat in the king's gate.
20. 모르드개가 명한 대로 에스더가 그에게 자기의 친족과 백성을 알리지 아니하였으니 그녀가 그와 함께하며 자랄 때와 같이 모르드개의 명령을 행하였더라. 20. Esther had not yet shewed her kindred nor her people; as Mordecai had charged her: for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai, like as when she was brought up with him.
21. ¶ 그때에 모르드개가 왕의 문에 앉아 있었는데 문을 지키는 자들 중에서 곧 왕의 시종장들 중에서 빅단과 데레스 두 사람이 분노하여 아하수에로 왕에게 손을 대려 하거늘 21. ¶ In those days, while Mordecai sat in the king's gate, two of the king's chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those which kept the door, were wroth, and sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus.
22. 모르드개가 그 일을 알게 되어 왕비 에스더에게 그것을 말하매 에스더가 모르드개의 이름으로 이 일을 왕에게 알리니라. 22. And the thing was known to Mordecai, who told it unto Esther the queen; and Esther certified the king thereof in Mordecai's name.
23. 그 문제에 관하여 조사를 하매 그 일이 드러났으므로 사람들이 그들 둘을 나무에 매달고 그 일을 왕 앞에서 연대기 책에 기록하니라. 23. And when inquisition was made of the matter, it was found out; therefore they were both hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.
1. 이 일들 뒤에 아하수에로 왕이 아각 사람 함므다다의 아들 하만을 높이고 그를 승진시켜 그의 자리를 자기와 함께한 모든 통치자들의 자리보다 위에 두니라. 1. After these things did king Ahasuerus promote Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him, and set his seat above all the princes that were with him.
2. 왕의 문에 있던 왕의 모든 신하가 왕이 그에 관하여 명령을 내렸으므로 하만에게 몸을 굽히고 경의를 표하되 모르드개는 몸을 굽히지도 아니하고 경의를 표하지도 아니하니 2. And all the king's servants, that were in the king's gate, bowed, and reverenced Haman: for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence.
3. 그때에 왕의 문에 있던 왕의 신하들이 모르드개에게 이르되, 네가 어찌하여 왕의 명령을 범하느냐? 하더라. 3. Then the king's servants, which were in the king's gate, said unto Mordecai, Why transgressest thou the king's commandment?
4. 이제 그들이 날마다 그에게 말하되 그가 그들의 말에 귀를 기울이지 아니하매 그들이 모르드개의 일이 지속되는지 보려고 하만에게 고하였으니 이는 그가 자신이 유대인임을 그들에게 고하였기 때문이더라. 4. Now it came to pass, when they spake daily unto him, and he hearkened not unto them, that they told Haman, to see whether Mordecai's matters would stand: for he had told them that he was a Jew.
5. 하만이 모르드개가 몸을 굽히지도 아니하고 자기에게 경의를 표하지도 아니함을 보고 심히 진노하였더라. 5. And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence, then was Haman full of wrath.
6. 그들이 모르드개의 백성을 하만에게 알려 주었으므로 그가 모르드개에게만 손을 대는 것을 수치로 여기고 아하수에로의 전 왕국에 두루 있던 모든 유대인 곧 모르드개의 백성을 멸하고자 하였더라. 6. And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had shewed him the people of Mordecai: wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.
7. ¶ 아하수에로 왕의 제십이년 첫째 달 곧 니산 월에 그들이 하만 앞에서 부르 즉 제비를 뽑되 날에서 날로, 달에서 달로 뽑아 십이월 곧 아달 월을 얻으니라. 7. ¶ In the first month, that is, the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day to day, and from month to month, to the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar.
8. ¶ 하만이 아하수에로 왕에게 아뢰되, 어떤 한 백성이 왕의 왕국의 모든 지방에서 백성들 가운데 널리 흩어져서 퍼져 있는데 그들의 법들은 모든 백성들의 법들과 다르며 또한 그들이 왕의 법들을 지키지 아니하므로 그들을 용납하는 것이 왕에게 유익이 되지 아니하니이다. 8. ¶ And Haman said unto king Ahasuerus, There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people in all the provinces of thy kingdom; and their laws are diverse from all people; neither keep they the king's laws: therefore it is not for the king's profit to suffer them.
9. 왕이 만일 기쁘게 여기시거든 문서를 쓰셔서 그들을 멸하게 하소서. 내가 그 일의 책무를 맡은 자들의 손에 은 만 달란트를 지급하고 그것을 왕의 보고에 가져다 넣으리이다, 하매 9. If it please the king, let it be written that they may be destroyed: and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the business, to bring it into the king's treasuries.
10. 왕이 자기의 반지를 손에서 빼어 유대인들의 원수 곧 아각 사람 함므다다의 아들 하만에게 주며 10. And the king took his ring from his hand, and gave it unto Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the Jews' enemy.
11. 또 왕이 하만에게 이르되, 그 은을 네게 주고 그 백성도 그리하노니 너 보기에 좋은 대로 그들에게 행하라, 하더라. 11. And the king said unto Haman, The silver is given to thee, the people also, to do with them as it seemeth good to thee.
12. 이에 첫째 달 십삼일에 왕의 서기관들이 소집되어 하만이 명령한 모든 것에 따라 쓰고 왕의 부관들과 각 지방을 감독하는 총독들과 각 지방의 각 백성의 치리자들에게 보내되 각 지방의 글과 그들의 말로 각 백성에게 보내었으니 그것은 아하수에로 왕의 이름으로 쓰고 왕의 반지로 날인한 것이더라. 12. Then were the king's scribes called on the thirteenth day of the first month, and there was written according to all that Haman had commanded unto the king's lieutenants, and to the governors that were over every province, and to the rulers of every people of every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language; in the name of king Ahasuerus was it written, and sealed with the king's ring.
13. 그가 그 편지를 파발꾼들을 통해 왕의 모든 지방에 보내어 십이월 곧 아달 월 십삼일 하루 동안 젊은이나 늙은이나 어린이나 여인을 막론하고 모든 유대인을 멸하고 죽이며 소멸시키고 또 그들을 탈취물로 삼아 노략하게 하였으며 13. And the letters were sent by posts into all the king's provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to take the spoil of them for a prey.
14. 또 각 지방에 전달될 명령을 위한 문서의 사본을 모든 백성들에게 널리 알렸으니 이것은 그들이 그 날을 대비하게 하려 함이더라. 14. The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people, that they should be ready against that day.
15. 파발꾼들이 왕의 명령에 따라 신속히 움직여 나가매 그 칙령이 수산 궁에도 전달되니라. 왕과 하만은 마시려고 앉았으나 수산 시는 혼란에 빠지니라. 15. The posts went out, being hastened by the king's commandment, and the decree was given in Shushan the palace. And the king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city Shushan was perplexed.
1. 모르드개가 이루어진 모든 일을 깨닫고는 자기 옷을 찢고 굵은 베옷을 입으며 재를 뒤집어쓰고 도시 한가운데로 나가서 큰 소리로 비통하게 부르짖으며 1. When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and a bitter cry;
2. 심지어 왕의 문 앞에까지 이르렀으니 이는 굵은 베옷을 입고는 아무도 왕의 문에 들어가지 못하였기 때문이더라. 2. And came even before the king's gate: for none might enter into the king's gate clothed with sackcloth.
3. 왕의 명령과 그의 칙령이 이른 모든 지방에서 유대인들이 크게 애곡하고 금식하며 슬피 울고 울부짖었으며 또 많은 사람이 굵은 베옷을 입고 재에 누웠더라. 3. And in every province, whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.
4. ¶ 이에 에스더의 시녀들과 시종장들이 나아와 그 일을 그녀에게 고하니 그때에 왕비가 심히 근심하여 모르드개에게 입힐 의복을 보내어 그의 굵은 베옷을 벗기려 하였으나 그가 그것을 받지 아니하였더라. 4. ¶ So Esther's maids and her chamberlains came and told it her. Then was the queen exceedingly grieved; and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take away his sackcloth from him: but he received it not.
5. 이에 에스더가 왕이 정하여 자기를 섬기게 한 자 곧 왕의 시종장들 중의 하나인 하닥을 부르고 그에게 명령을 내려 모르드개에게 가서 그것이 무슨 일이며 무슨 이유 때문인지 알아보게 하매 5. Then called Esther for Hatach, one of the king's chamberlains, whom he had appointed to attend upon her, and gave him a commandment to Mordecai, to know what it was, and why it was.
6. 하닥이 왕의 문 앞에 있던 도시의 거리로 가서 모르드개에게 이르니 6. So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city, which was before the king's gate.
7. 모르드개가 자기에게 일어난 모든 일과 하만이 유대인들로 인해 그들을 멸하려고 왕의 보고에 바치기로 약속한 돈의 총액을 그에게 말하며 7. And Mordecai told him of all that had happened unto him, and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king's treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them.
8. 또 수산에서 그들을 멸하기 위해 전달된 칙령 문서의 사본을 그에게 주고 그것을 에스더에게 보여 주어 그녀에게 그것을 밝히 알리게 하며 또 그녀에게 부탁하여 그녀가 왕에게 들어가 그 앞에서 자기 백성을 위해 그에게 간구하고 요청하게 하니 8. Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them, to shew it unto Esther, and to declare it unto her, and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, to make supplication unto him, and to make request before him for her people.
9. 하닥이 돌아와 모르드개의 말을 에스더에게 고하니라. 9. And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.
10. ¶ 에스더가 다시 하닥에게 말하고 그에게 명령을 내려 모르드개에게 전하기를, 10. ¶ Again Esther spake unto Hatach, and gave him commandment unto Mordecai;
11. 왕의 모든 신하들과 왕의 지방들의 백성들이 알거니와 남자와 여자를 막론하고 누구든지 부름을 받지 아니하고 안뜰에 들어가 왕에게 나아가면 왕의 법은 그를 죽이는 것 하나뿐이며 다만 왕이 그 사람에게 황금 홀(笏)을 내밀어야 그가 살리이다. 그러나 이제 내가 부름을 받지 못해 왕에게 나아가지 못한 지 이미 삼십 일이나 되었나이다, 하라. 11. All the king's servants, and the people of the king's provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.
12. 그들이 에스더의 말을 모르드개에게 고하매 12. And they told to Mordecai Esther's words.
13. 그때에 모르드개가 명령하여 에스더에게 회답하되, 네가 왕의 집에서 모든 유대인들보다 더 잘 피하리라고 스스로 생각하지 말라. 13. Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king's house, more than all the Jews.
14. 이때에 네가 전적으로 잠잠하면 유대인들은 다른 곳으로부터 해방과 구출을 받으려니와 너와 네 아버지 집은 멸망하리라. 네가 이와 같은 때를 위해 왕국에 들어갔는지 누가 알겠느냐? 하니라. 14. For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?
15. ¶ 이에 에스더가 그들에게 명하여 돌아가서 모르드개에게 이같이 답하게 하되, 15. ¶ Then Esther bade them return Mordecai this answer,
16. 가서 수산에 있는 모든 유대인들을 함께 모으고 당신들은 나를 위하여 금식하되 사흘 동안 밤낮으로 먹지도 말고 마시지도 마소서. 나도 내 시녀들과 함께 그렇게 금식하리이다. 그리고 나서 내가 법대로 하지 아니하고 왕에게 들어가리니 내가 죽으면 죽으리이다, 하매 16. Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.
17. 이에 모르드개가 자기 길로 가서 에스더가 자기에게 명령한 모든 것에 따라 행하니라. 17. So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.
1. 이제 셋째 날에 에스더가 왕비의 예복을 입고 왕의 집 안뜰 곧 왕의 집 맞은편에 서매 왕이 왕의 집에서 그 집의 문을 마주보며 자신의 왕좌에 앉아 있다가 1. Now it came to pass on the third day, that Esther put on her royal apparel, and stood in the inner court of the king's house, over against the king's house: and the king sat upon his royal throne in the royal house, over against the gate of the house.
2. 왕비 에스더가 뜰에 선 것을 보았는데 이때에 그녀가 왕의 눈앞에서 호의를 입으니라. 왕이 손에 잡고 있던 황금 홀을 에스더에게 내미니 이에 에스더가 가까이 가서 홀의 윗부분에 손을 대니라. 2. And it was so, when the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court, that she obtained favour in his sight: and the king held out to Esther the golden sceptre that was in his hand. So Esther drew near, and touched the top of the sceptre.
3. 그때에 왕이 그녀에게 이르되, 왕비 에스더여, 그대의 소원이 무엇이냐? 또 그대의 요구가 무엇이냐? 왕국의 절반이라도 그대에게 주겠노라, 하매 3. Then said the king unto her, What wilt thou, queen Esther? and what is thy request? it shall be even given thee to the half of the kingdom.
4. 에스더가 응답하되, 왕이 좋게 여기시거든 이 날 왕과 하만이 내가 왕을 위해 베푼 잔치에 나아오소서, 하매 4. And Esther answered, If it seem good unto the king, let the king and Haman come this day unto the banquet that I have prepared for him.
5. 그때에 왕이 이르되, 하만이 에스더가 말한 대로 행하도록 그를 급히 부르라, 하고 이에 왕과 하만이 에스더가 베푼 잔치에 가니라. 5. Then the king said, Cause Haman to make haste, that he may do as Esther hath said. So the king and Haman came to the banquet that Esther had prepared.
6. ¶ 포도주 잔치에서 왕이 에스더에게 이르되, 그대의 청원이 무엇이냐? 그대에게 허락하겠노라. 그대의 요구가 무엇이냐? 왕국의 절반이라도 시행하겠노라, 하니 6. ¶ And the king said unto Esther at the banquet of wine, What is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: and what is thy request? even to the half of the kingdom it shall be performed.
7. 그때에 에스더가 응답하여 말하되, 나의 청원과 나의 요구가 이러하니이다. 7. Then answered Esther, and said, My petition and my request is;
8. 내가 만일 왕의 눈앞에서 호의를 입었고 왕께서 나의 청원을 허락하시며 나의 요구를 시행하기를 기뻐하시거든 내가 왕과 하만을 위해 베풀 잔치에 나아오소서. 내일은 내가 왕께서 말씀하신 대로 하리이다, 하니라. 8. If I have found favour in the sight of the king, and if it please the king to grant my petition, and to perform my request, let the king and Haman come to the banquet that I shall prepare for them, and I will do to morrow as the king hath said.
9. ¶ 그때에 그 날에 하만이 기뻐하며 즐거운 마음으로 나왔으나 모르드개가 왕의 문에 있으면서 일어나지도 아니하고 자기를 위해 몸을 움직이지도 아니하는 것을 보고는 모르드개에게 심히 노하니라. 9. ¶ Then went Haman forth that day joyful and with a glad heart: but when Haman saw Mordecai in the king's gate, that he stood not up, nor moved for him, he was full of indignation against Mordecai.
10. 그럼에도 불구하고 하만이 참고 집으로 와서 사람을 보내어 자기 친구들과 자기 아내 세레스를 불러 10. Nevertheless Haman refrained himself: and when he came home, he sent and called for his friends, and Zeresh his wife.
11. 자기 재물의 영광과 자녀가 많은 것과 왕이 자기를 높인 모든 일과 왕의 통치자들과 신하들보다 자기를 더 높이 승진시킨 것을 말하며 11. And Haman told them of the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and all the things wherein the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king.
12. 또 이르되, 참으로 왕비 에스더가 베푼 잔치에 왕비가 나 외에는 아무도 왕과 함께 오지 못하게 하였고 내일도 내가 왕과 함께 그녀에게 이르도록 초청을 받았느니라. 12. Haman said moreover, Yea, Esther the queen did let no man come in with the king unto the banquet that she had prepared but myself; and to morrow am I invited unto her also with the king.
13. 그러나 유대인 모르드개가 왕의 문에 앉은 것을 내가 보는 한 이 모든 일이 내게 아무 소용이 없도다, 하니라. 13. Yet all this availeth me nothing, so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king's gate.
14. ¶ 그때에 그의 아내 세레스와 그의 모든 친구가 그에게 이르되, 당신은 높이가 오십 큐빗 되는 교수대를 세우고 내일 왕에게 말하여 모르드개를 거기에 매다소서. 그 뒤에 왕과 함께 즐거이 잔치에 들어가소서, 하니 하만이 그것을 기쁘게 여기고 교수대를 세우게 하니라. 14. ¶ Then said Zeresh his wife and all his friends unto him, Let a gallows be made of fifty cubits high, and to morrow speak thou unto the king that Mordecai may be hanged thereon: then go thou in merrily with the king unto the banquet. And the thing pleased Haman; and he caused the gallows to be made.
1. 그 밤에 왕이 잠을 잘 수 없었으므로 명령을 내려 연대기 기록들을 담은 책을 가져다가 왕 앞에서 그것들을 읽혔는데 1. On that night could not the king sleep, and he commanded to bring the book of records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king.
2. 거기서 발견된바 기록되기를, 모르드개가 아하수에로 왕에게 손을 대려 하던 빅다나와 데레스 곧 문을 지키는 자들이요, 왕의 시종장이던 두 사람에 대해 고하였다, 하였으므로 2. And it was found written, that Mordecai had told of Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's chamberlains, the keepers of the door, who sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus.
3. 왕이 이르되, 이 일로 인하여 무슨 존귀한 일과 위엄 있는 일을 모르드개에게 행하였느냐? 하니 그때에 왕을 섬기는 왕의 신하들이 그에게 이르되, 그를 위해 아무것도 행하지 아니하였나이다, 하니라. 3. And the king said, What honour and dignity hath been done to Mordecai for this? Then said the king's servants that ministered unto him, There is nothing done for him.
4. ¶ 왕이 이르되, 누가 뜰에 있느냐? 하매 마침 하만이 자기가 이미 모르드개를 위해 예비한 교수대에 그를 매달려고 왕에게 말하기 위해 왕의 집의 바깥뜰에 이르렀으므로 4. ¶ And the king said, Who is in the court? Now Haman was come into the outward court of the king's house, to speak unto the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him.
5. 왕의 신하들이 그에게 이르되, 보소서, 하만이 뜰에 서 있나이다, 하니 왕이 이르되, 그를 들여보내라, 하매 5. And the king's servants said unto him, Behold, Haman standeth in the court. And the king said, Let him come in.
6. 이에 하만이 들어오거늘 왕이 그에게 이르되, 왕이 존귀하게 하기를 기뻐하는 사람에게 무슨 일을 하여야 하겠느냐? 하니 이제 하만이 마음속으로 생각하되, 왕이 나보다 더 존귀하게 하기를 기뻐하시는 자가 누구이리요? 하고 6. So Haman came in. And the king said unto him, What shall be done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honour? Now Haman thought in his heart, To whom would the king delight to do honour more than to myself?
7. 왕에게 대답하되, 왕께서 존귀하게 하기를 기뻐하시는 그 사람을 위해 7. And Haman answered the king, For the man whom the king delighteth to honour,
8. 왕께서 입으시는 왕의 예복과 왕께서 타시는 말과 머리에 쓰시는 왕관을 취하고 8. Let the royal apparel be brought which the king useth to wear, and the horse that the king rideth upon, and the crown royal which is set upon his head:
9. 이 예복과 말을 왕의 가장 존귀한 통치자들 중 한 사람의 손에 넘겨주시어 그들이 왕이 존귀하게 하기를 기뻐하시는 그 사람에게 그 옷을 입히고 그를 말 등에 태워 도시의 거리로 다니게 하며 또 그 앞에서 선포하여 이르기를, 왕이 존귀하게 하기를 기뻐하시는 사람에게 이같이 행하리라, 하게 하소서, 하니라. 9. And let this apparel and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king's most noble princes, that they may array the man withal whom the king delighteth to honour, and bring him on horseback through the street of the city, and proclaim before him, Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delighteth to honour.
10. 이에 왕이 하만에게 이르되, 네가 말한 대로 속히 예복과 말을 취하여 왕의 문에 앉아 있는 유대인 모르드개에게 그렇게 행하되 네가 말한 모든 것에서 하나도 빠진 것이 없게 하라, 하니라. 10. Then the king said to Haman, Make haste, and take the apparel and the horse, as thou hast said, and do even so to Mordecai the Jew, that sitteth at the king's gate: let nothing fail of all that thou hast spoken.
11. 이에 하만이 예복과 말을 취하여 모르드개에게 옷을 입히고 그를 말 등에 태워 도시의 거리로 다니며 그 앞에서 선포하되, 왕이 존귀하게 하기를 기뻐하시는 사람에게 이같이 행하리라, 하니라. 11. Then took Haman the apparel and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, and brought him on horseback through the street of the city, and proclaimed before him, Thus shall it be done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honour.
12. ¶ 모르드개는 다시 왕의 문으로 돌아왔으나 하만은 애곡하며 자기 머리를 덮은 채 급히 집으로 돌아와 12. ¶ And Mordecai came again to the king's gate. But Haman hasted to his house mourning, and having his head covered.
13. 자기에게 임한 모든 일을 자기 아내 세레스와 자기의 모든 친구에게 고하매 그때에 그에게 속한 지혜로운 자들과 그의 아내 세레스가 그에게 이르되, 모르드개가 유대인들의 씨라면 당신이 그 앞에서 쓰러지기 시작하였으니 당신이 능히 그를 이기지 못하고 분명히 그 앞에 쓰러지리이다, 하니라. 13. And Haman told Zeresh his wife and all his friends every thing that had befallen him. Then said his wise men and Zeresh his wife unto him, If Mordecai be of the seed of the Jews, before whom thou hast begun to fall, thou shalt not prevail against him, but shalt surely fall before him.
14. 아직 그들이 그와 함께 말하고 있을 때에 왕의 시종장들이 이르러 급히 하만을 데리고 에스더가 베푼 잔치에 가니라. 14. And while they were yet talking with him, came the king's chamberlains, and hasted to bring Haman unto the banquet that Esther had prepared.
1. 이처럼 왕과 하만이 왕비 에스더와 함께 잔치에 가니라. 1. So the king and Haman came to banquet with Esther the queen.
2. 왕이 둘째 날 포도주 잔치에서 다시 에스더에게 이르되, 왕비 에스더여, 그대의 청원이 무엇이냐? 그대에게 허락하겠노라. 그대의 요구가 무엇이냐? 왕국의 절반이라도 시행하겠노라, 하니 2. And the king said again unto Esther on the second day at the banquet of wine, What is thy petition, queen Esther? and it shall be granted thee: and what is thy request? and it shall be performed, even to the half of the kingdom.
3. 그때에 왕비 에스더가 응답하여 이르되, 오 왕이여, 내가 만일 왕의 눈앞에서 호의를 입었고 또 왕이 기쁘게 여기시거든 내 청원대로 내 생명을 내게 주시고 내 요구대로 내 백성을 내게 주소서. 3. Then Esther the queen answered and said, If I have found favour in thy sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request:
4. 우리 곧 나와 내 백성이 멸망과 살육을 당해 소멸되도록 팔렸나이다. 그러나 만일 우리가 남자 노예나 여자 노예로 팔렸더라면 비록 그 원수가 왕의 손해를 보상할 수 없다 할지라도 내가 내 혀를 억제하였으리이다, 하니라. 4. For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondmen and bondwomen, I had held my tongue, although the enemy could not countervail the king's damage.
5. ¶ 이에 아하수에로 왕이 왕비 에스더에게 응답하여 이르되, 감히 마음속으로 이와 같이 하려고 한 자가 누구며 그가 어디 있느냐? 하니 5. ¶ Then the king Ahasuerus answered and said unto Esther the queen, Who is he, and where is he, that durst presume in his heart to do so?
6. 에스더가 이르되, 그 대적과 원수는 이 악한 하만이니이다, 하매 그때에 하만이 왕과 왕비 앞에서 두려워하니라. 6. And Esther said, The adversary and enemy is this wicked Haman. Then Haman was afraid before the king and the queen.
7. ¶ 왕이 진노하여 일어나서 포도주 잔치를 떠나 왕궁의 정원으로 들어가니라. 하만이 일어서서 자기 생명을 구하려고 왕비 에스더에게 간구하였으니 이는 왕이 자기에게 화를 내리기로 결심한 줄 그가 보았기 때문이더라. 7. ¶ And the king arising from the banquet of wine in his wrath went into the palace garden: and Haman stood up to make request for his life to Esther the queen; for he saw that there was evil determined against him by the king.
8. 그때에 왕이 왕궁의 정원으로부터 포도주 잔치를 여는 장소에 돌아오매 하만이 에스더가 있던 침상 위에 엎드러져 있으므로 이에 왕이 이르되, 그가 집에서 내 앞에서 왕비도 강제로 욕보이려 하는가? 하니 이 말이 왕의 입에서 나오매 그들이 하만의 얼굴을 덮으니라. 8. Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman was fallen upon the bed whereon Esther was. Then said the king, Will he force the queen also before me in the house? As the word went out of the king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.
9. 왕의 시종장들 중의 하나인 하르보나가 왕 앞에서 아뢰되, 또한 보소서, 왕을 위하여 좋은 것을 아뢴 모르드개를 매달기 위해 하만이 만든 오십 큐빗 높이의 교수대가 하만의 집에 서 있나이다, 하니 그때에 왕이 이르되, 그를 거기에 매달라, 하니라. 9. And Harbonah, one of the chamberlains, said before the king, Behold also, the gallows fifty cubits high, which Haman had made for Mordecai, who had spoken good for the king, standeth in the house of Haman. Then the king said, Hang him thereon.
10. 이에 하만이 모르드개를 위해 예비한 교수대에 그들이 하만을 매다니 그 뒤에 왕의 진노가 진정되니라. 10. So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified.
1. 그 날에 아하수에로 왕이 유대인들의 원수 하만의 집을 왕비 에스더에게 주니라. 에스더가 모르드개가 자기와 어떤 관계인가를 왕에게 고하였으므로 그가 왕 앞에 나아오니 1. On that day did the king Ahasuerus give the house of Haman the Jews' enemy unto Esther the queen. And Mordecai came before the king; for Esther had told what he was unto her.
2. 왕이 하만에게서 거둔 자기 반지를 빼어 모르드개에게 주매 에스더가 모르드개를 세워 하만의 집을 다스리게 하니라. 2. And the king took off his ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it unto Mordecai. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.
3. ¶ 에스더가 여전히 다시 왕 앞에서 말하며 그의 발에 엎드려 아각 사람 하만의 해악과 유대인들을 치려고 그가 꾸민 그의 계략을 제거해 줄 것을 눈물로 그에게 간청하니 3. ¶ And Esther spake yet again before the king, and fell down at his feet, and besought him with tears to put away the mischief of Haman the Agagite, and his device that he had devised against the Jews.
4. 그때에 왕이 에스더를 향해 황금 홀(笏)을 내밀매 이에 에스더가 일어나 왕 앞에 서서 4. Then the king held out the golden sceptre toward Esther. So Esther arose, and stood before the king,
5. 이르되, 왕이 만일 기뻐하시며 내가 왕의 눈앞에서 호의를 입었고 또 왕이 그 일을 옳게 여기시며 왕의 눈으로 나를 기쁘게 보실진대 문서를 쓰게 하사 아각 사람 함므다다의 아들 하만이 왕의 모든 지방에 있는 유대인들을 멸하려고 계획하여 쓴 편지를 취소하소서. 5. And said, If it please the king, and if I have found favour in his sight, and the thing seem right before the king, and I be pleasing in his eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised by Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews which are in all the king's provinces:
6. 내가 어찌 내 백성에게 임할 화를 차마 볼 수 있으리이까? 또 내 친족들이 멸망하는 것을 차마 볼 수 있으리이까? 하니라. 6. For how can I endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people? or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred?
7. ¶ 그때에 아하수에로 왕이 왕비 에스더와 유대인 모르드개에게 이르되, 보라, 하만이 유대인들에게 손을 대었으므로 그들이 그를 교수대에 매달았고 내가 그의 집을 에스더에게 주었으니 7. ¶ Then the king Ahasuerus said unto Esther the queen and to Mordecai the Jew, Behold, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and him they have hanged upon the gallows, because he laid his hand upon the Jews.
8. 너희는 또한 왕의 이름으로 유대인들을 위해 너희 마음대로 문서를 쓰고 왕의 반지로 그것을 날인할지어다. 왕의 이름으로 기록하고 왕의 반지로 날인한 문서는 아무도 취소할 수 없느니라, 하니라. 8. Write ye also for the Jews, as it liketh you, in the king's name, and seal it with the king's ring: for the writing which is written in the king's name, and sealed with the king's ring, may no man reverse.
9. 이에 그때에 셋째 달 곧 시반 월 즉 그 달 이십삼일에 왕의 서기관들이 소집되어 모르드개가 명령한 모든 것에 따라 문서를 써서 인도로부터 에티오피아까지 백스물일곱 지방의 유대인들과 부관들과 지방들의 총독들과 치리자들에게 보내되 각 지방의 글에 따라 각 지방에, 각 백성에게 그들의 말대로 보내고 또 유대인들에게 그들의 글과 말로 보내니라. 9. Then were the king's scribes called at that time in the third month, that is, the month Sivan, on the three and twentieth day thereof; and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded unto the Jews, and to the lieutenants, and the deputies and rulers of the provinces which are from India unto Ethiopia, an hundred twenty and seven provinces, unto every province according to the writing thereof, and unto every people after their language, and to the Jews according to their writing, and according to their language.
10. 그가 아하수에로 왕의 이름으로 쓰고 왕의 반지로 그것을 날인해서 말 등에 타는 파발꾼들과 노새와 낙타와 젊은 단봉낙타를 타는 자들을 통해 편지를 보내니라. 10. And he wrote in the king Ahasuerus' name, and sealed it with the king's ring, and sent letters by posts on horseback, and riders on mules, camels, and young dromedaries:
11. 그 편지에서 왕은 모든 도시에 있던 유대인들이 함께 모여 자기들의 생명을 지키기 위해 일어서고 또 그들 즉 어린것들과 여인들을 습격하려는 백성과 지방의 모든 권력자들을 멸하고 죽이고 소멸시키며 또 그들에게서 전리품을 취해 탈취물로 삼을 것을 허락하되 11. Wherein the king granted the Jews which were in every city to gather themselves together, and to stand for their life, to destroy, to slay, and to cause to perish, all the power of the people and province that would assault them, both little ones and women, and to take the spoil of them for a prey,
12. 아하수에로 왕의 모든 지방에서 하루에 즉 십이월 곧 아달 월 십삼일에 할 것을 그들에게 허락하였고 12. Upon one day in all the provinces of king Ahasuerus, namely, upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar.
13. 모든 지방에 전달될 명령을 기록한 문서의 사본을 모든 백성들에게 널리 알려 유대인들이 그 날을 대비하여 그들의 원수들에게 복수하게 하니라. 13. The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people, and that the Jews should be ready against that day to avenge themselves on their enemies.
14. 이처럼 노새와 낙타를 탄 파발꾼들이 왕의 명령에 따라 신속히 재촉하여 나가매 그 칙령이 수산 궁에 전달되니라. 14. So the posts that rode upon mules and camels went out, being hastened and pressed on by the king's commandment. And the decree was given at Shushan the palace.
15. ¶ 모르드개가 청색과 흰색으로 된 왕의 예복을 입고 금으로 된 큰 관을 쓰고 고운 아마와 자주색 옷을 입고 왕 앞에서 물러나오니 수산 시가 기뻐하며 즐거워하고 15. ¶ And Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal apparel of blue and white, and with a great crown of gold, and with a garment of fine linen and purple: and the city of Shushan rejoiced and was glad.
16. 유대인들에게는 광명과 기쁨과 즐거움과 존귀가 있었더라. 16. The Jews had light, and gladness, and joy, and honour.
17. 왕의 명령과 그의 칙령이 전달된 모든 곳에서는 각 지방과 각 도시에서 유대인들이 기뻐하고 즐거워하여 잔치를 열고 좋은 날을 보냈으며 그 땅의 백성 중에서 많은 사람이 유대인이 되었으니 이는 유대인들의 두려움이 그들에게 임하였기 때문이더라. 17. And in every province, and in every city, whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, the Jews had joy and gladness, a feast and a good day. And many of the people of the land became Jews; for the fear of the Jews fell upon them.
1. 이제 십이월 곧 아달 월 즉 바로 그 달의 십삼일이 되어 왕의 명령과 그의 칙령을 집행할 때가 가까이 이르니라. 이 날에 유대인들의 원수들이 그들을 지배하려고 바랐으나 (일이 거꾸로 되어 유대인들이 도리어 자기들을 미워하던 자들을 지배하였더라.) 1. Now in the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the same, when the king's commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them, (though it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had rule over them that hated them;)
2. 유대인들이 아하수에로 왕의 모든 지방에서 두루 자기들의 도시들에 함께 모여 자기들을 해치려고 하는 자들에게 손을 대려 하였더라. 아무도 능히 그들을 막지 못하였으니 이는 그들의 두려움이 모든 백성들에게 임하였기 때문이더라. 2. The Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, to lay hand on such as sought their hurt: and no man could withstand them; for the fear of them fell upon all people.
3. 지방들의 모든 치리자들과 부관들과 총독들과 왕의 직무 수행자들이 유대인들을 도왔으니 이는 모르드개의 두려움이 그들에게 임하였기 때문이더라. 3. And all the rulers of the provinces, and the lieutenants, and the deputies, and officers of the king, helped the Jews; because the fear of Mordecai fell upon them.
4. 모르드개가 왕의 집에서 창대하게 되고 그의 명성이 모든 지방에 두루 퍼졌으니 이는 이 사람 모르드개가 점점 더 창대하게 되었기 때문이더라. 4. For Mordecai was great in the king's house, and his fame went out throughout all the provinces: for this man Mordecai waxed greater and greater.
5. 이와 같이 유대인들이 칼을 휘둘러 자기들의 모든 원수를 쳐서 살육하고 멸하였으며 자기들을 미워하던 자들에게 자기들이 원하는 대로 행하였더라. 5. Thus the Jews smote all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and slaughter, and destruction, and did what they would unto those that hated them.
6. 또 수산 궁에서 유대인들이 오백 명을 죽여 멸하였고 6. And in Shushan the palace the Jews slew and destroyed five hundred men.
7. 또 바산다다와 달본과 아스바다와 7. And Parshandatha, and Dalphon, and Aspatha,
8. 보라다와 아달랴와 아리다다와 8. And Poratha, and Adalia, and Aridatha,
9. 바마스다와 아리새와 아리대와 왜사다 9. And Parmashta, and Arisai, and Aridai, and Vajezatha,
10. 곧 함므다다의 손자요, 유대인들의 원수인 하만의 열 아들을 죽였으나 노략물에는 손을 대지 아니하였더라. 10. The ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews, slew they; but on the spoil laid they not their hand.
11. 그 날에 수산 궁에서 죽임 당한 자들의 수를 왕 앞에 가져가니라. 11. On that day the number of those that were slain in Shushan the palace was brought before the king.
12. ¶ 왕이 왕비 에스더에게 이르되, 유대인들이 수산 궁에서 이미 오백 명을 죽여 멸하고 또 하만의 열 아들도 그리하였으니 왕의 나머지 지방들에서는 그들이 무엇을 하였겠느냐? 이제 그대의 청원이 무엇이냐? 그대에게 허락하겠노라. 또는 그대의 요구가 또 무엇이냐? 그것을 시행하겠노라, 하니 12. ¶ And the king said unto Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the palace, and the ten sons of Haman; what have they done in the rest of the king's provinces? now what is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: or what is thy request further? and it shall be done.
13. 그때에 에스더가 이르되, 왕이 만일 기쁘게 여기시거든 수산에 있는 유대인들이 내일도 이 날의 칙령대로 행하게 허락하시고 하만의 열 아들을 교수대에 매달게 하소서, 하매 13. Then said Esther, If it please the king, let it be granted to the Jews which are in Shushan to do to morrow also according unto this day's decree, and let Haman's ten sons be hanged upon the gallows.
14. 왕이 명령하여 그대로 행하게 하고 칙령을 수산에 내리니 그들이 하만의 열 아들을 매다니라. 14. And the king commanded it so to be done: and the decree was given at Shushan; and they hanged Haman's ten sons.
15. 아달 월 십사일에도 수산에 있던 유대인들이 함께 모여 삼백 명을 수산에서 죽였으나 탈취물에는 손을 대지 아니하였더라. 15. For the Jews that were in Shushan gathered themselves together on the fourteenth day also of the month Adar, and slew three hundred men at Shushan; but on the prey they laid not their hand.
16. 그러나 왕의 지방들에 있던 다른 유대인들이 함께 모여 자기들의 생명을 지키기 위해 일어서고 자기들의 원수들에게서 벗어나 안식을 얻으며 자기들의 원수 칠만 오천 명을 죽였으나 탈취물에는 손을 대지 아니하였더라. 16. But the other Jews that were in the king's provinces gathered themselves together, and stood for their lives, and had rest from their enemies, and slew of their foes seventy and five thousand, but they laid not their hands on the prey,
17. 그들이 아달 월 십삼일에 그 일을 행하였고 바로 그 달 십사일에는 안식하였으며 그 날을 잔치하며 즐기는 날로 삼았더라. 17. On the thirteenth day of the month Adar; and on the fourteenth day of the same rested they, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.
18. 그러나 수산에 있던 유대인들은 그 달 십삼일과 십사일에 함께 모였고 바로 그 달 십오일에 안식하였으며 그 날을 잔치하며 즐기는 날로 삼았더라. 18. But the Jews that were at Shushan assembled together on the thirteenth day thereof, and on the fourteenth thereof; and on the fifteenth day of the same they rested, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.
19. 그러므로 마을들에 사는 유대인들 곧 성벽이 없는 고을들에 거하던 자들이 아달 월 십사일을 즐기며 잔치하는 날로, 좋은 날로 삼고 또 서로에게 음식을 보내는 날로 삼으니라. 19. Therefore the Jews of the villages, that dwelt in the unwalled towns, made the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting, and a good day, and of sending portions one to another.
20. ¶ 모르드개가 이 일들을 기록하고 가깝든지 멀든지 아하수에로 왕의 모든 지방에 있던 모든 유대인에게 편지를 보내어 20. ¶ And Mordecai wrote these things, and sent letters unto all the Jews that were in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, both nigh and far,
21. 그들 가운데서 이것 즉 그들이 해마다 아달 월 십사일과 바로 그 달의 십오일을 지킬 것을 굳게 세우되 21. To stablish this among them, that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar, and the fifteenth day of the same, yearly,
22. 이 날들을 유대인들이 자기들의 원수들에게서 벗어나 안식을 얻은 날들로, 슬픔이 변하여 기쁨이 되고 애곡하는 일이 변하여 좋은 날이 된 달로 지키게 하고 또 그들이 그 날들을 잔치하고 기뻐하는 날로 삼으며 또 서로에게 음식을 보내고 가난한 자들에게 선물을 주는 날로 삼게 하니라. 22. As the days wherein the Jews rested from their enemies, and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to joy, and from mourning into a good day: that they should make them days of feasting and joy, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor.
23. 유대인들이 이미 자기들이 시작한 대로 또 모르드개가 자기들에게 쓴 대로 행하였으니 23. And the Jews undertook to do as they had begun, and as Mordecai had written unto them;
24. 이는 아각 사람 함므다다의 아들로서 모든 유대인의 원수가 된 하만이 유대인들을 멸하려고 그들을 칠 계획을 꾸며 부르 곧 제비를 뽑아 그들을 소멸시키고 멸하려 하였기 때문이더라. 24. Because Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had devised against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast Pur, that is, the lot, to consume them, and to destroy them;
25. 그러나 에스더가 왕 앞에 가매 왕이 편지로 명령하여 그가 유대인들을 치려고 꾸민 그의 악한 계획을 그의 머리로 돌려보내어 그와 그의 아들들을 교수대에 매달게 하였더라. 25. But when Esther came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he devised against the Jews, should return upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.
26. 그러므로 그들이 부르라는 이름을 따라 이 날들을 부림이라 하니라. 그런즉 이 편지의 모든 말과 이 일에 관하여 자기들이 본 것과 자기들에게 일어난 일로 인해 26. Wherefore they called these days Purim after the name of Pur. Therefore for all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and which had come unto them,
27. 유대인들이 그렇게 정하였고 또 자기들과 자기들의 씨와 자기들에게 연합한 모든 자들이 그 날들의 기록대로 그 날들의 정한 때에 이 두 날을 해마다 지켜서 그것을 폐하지 아니하기로 작정하였으며 27. The Jews ordained, and took upon them, and upon their seed, and upon all such as joined themselves unto them, so as it should not fail, that they would keep these two days according to their writing, and according to their appointed time every year;
28. 또 각 세대, 각 가족, 각 지방, 각 도시에서 이 두 날을 기억하여 지키고 또 부림의 이 날들을 유대인들 가운데서 폐하지 아니하게 하며 이 날들을 기념하는 일이 자기들의 씨에게서도 없어지지 아니하게 하였더라. 28. And that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor the memorial of them perish from their seed.
29. 그때에 아비하일의 딸 왕비 에스더와 유대인 모르드개가 모든 권한을 가지고 글을 써서 부림에 관한 이 둘째 편지를 확정하였고 29. Then Esther the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew, wrote with all authority, to confirm this second letter of Purim.
30. 또 그가 평화롭고 진실한 말로 편지를 써서 아하수에로의 왕국의 백스물일곱 지방과 모든 유대인들에게 보내어 30. And he sent the letters unto all the Jews, to the hundred twenty and seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, with words of peace and truth,
31. 유대인 모르드개와 왕비 에스더가 그들에게 촉구한 대로 또 그들이 자기들과 자기들의 씨를 위해 금식하며 부르짖은 일들을 정한 대로 그 날들의 정한 때에 부림의 이 날들을 지킬 것을 확정하였더라. 31. To confirm these days of Purim in their times appointed, according as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had enjoined them, and as they had decreed for themselves and for their seed, the matters of the fastings and their cry.
32. 에스더의 명령이 부림에 관한 이 일들을 확정하였고 그 일이 책에 기록되었더라. 32. And the decree of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim; and it was written in the book.
1. 아하수에로 왕이 땅과 바다의 섬들에게 조공을 바치게 하였더라. 1. And the king Ahasuerus laid a tribute upon the land, and upon the isles of the sea.
2. 그의 능력과 권력에 따른 모든 행적과 왕이 모르드개를 위대한 자리로 승진시키고 그의 위대함을 밝히 드러낸 일이 메대와 페르시아 왕들의 연대기 책에 기록되어 있지 아니하냐? 2. And all the acts of his power and of his might, and the declaration of the greatness of Mordecai, whereunto the king advanced him, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia?
3. 유대인 모르드개가 아하수에로 왕의 다음이 되고 유대인들 가운데 위대하게 되어 자기의 형제들 무리에게 인정을 받으며 자기 백성의 번영을 추구하고 자기의 모든 씨에게 화평의 말을 하였더라. 3. For Mordecai the Jew was next unto king Ahasuerus, and great among the Jews, and accepted of the multitude of his brethren, seeking the wealth of his people, and speaking peace to all his seed.
