전도서
1. 다윗의 아들 예루살렘 왕 선포자의 말씀들이라. 1. The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
2. 선포자가 이르되, 헛되고 헛되며 헛되고 헛되니 모든 것이 헛되도다. 2. Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
3. 사람이 해 아래에서 행하는 자기의 모든 수고에서 무슨 유익을 얻으리요? 3. What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?
4. 한 세대는 가고 또 다른 세대가 오되 땅은 영원히 있도다. 4. One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
5. 또 해는 뜨고 해는 져서 자기 처소 곧 자기가 떴던 곳으로 속히 돌아가고 5. The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.
6. 바람은 남쪽으로 가다가 북쪽으로 돌이키며 계속해서 빙빙 돌다가 자기의 순환 회로에 따라 되돌아가고 6. The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.
7. 모든 강은 바다로 흐르되 여전히 바다를 채우지 못하며 강들은 자기들이 나오는 곳으로 거기로 되돌아가느니라. 7. All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
8. 모든 것이 수고로 가득하여 사람이 그것을 말할 수 없나니 눈은 보는 것으로 만족하지 아니하고 귀는 듣는 것으로 채워지지 아니하는도다. 8. All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
9. 이미 있던 것 즉 그것이 후에 있겠고 이미 행한 것을 후에 다시 행하리니 해 아래에는 새 것이 전혀 없도다. 9. The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
10. 무엇을 가리켜 이르기를, 보라, 이것은 새 것이라, 할 것이 있으랴? 그것은 우리가 있기 전에 이미 옛적부터 있었느니라. 10. Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
11. 아무도 이전 것들을 기억하지 아니하며 또 다가올 것들도 그 후에 있을 것들과 함께 기억되지 아니하리로다. 11. There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.
12. ¶ 나 선포자는 예루살렘에서 이스라엘을 다스리는 왕이 되어 12. ¶ I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
13. 지혜를 써서 하늘 아래에서 이루어진 모든 일에 관하여 찾아보고 탐구하려고 내 마음을 쏟았는데 하나님께서는 사람의 아들들에게 이 쓰라린 해산의 고통을 주사 그것으로 단련 받게 하셨느니라. 13. And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.
14. 내가 해 아래에서 이루어진 모든 일을 보았는데, 보라, 모든 것이 헛되며 영을 괴롭게 하는 것이로다. 14. I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
15. 구부러진 것을 곧게 할 수 없으며 모자라는 것을 셀 수 없도다. 15. That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.
16. 내가 내 마음과 이야기를 나누며 이르기를, 보라, 내가 큰 지위에 이르렀고 나보다 먼저 예루살렘에 있던 모든 사람들보다 더 많은 지혜를 얻었다, 하였나니 참으로 내 마음이 지혜와 지식의 큰 체험을 소유하였느니라. 16. I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
17. 또 내가 지혜를 알기 위해, 미친 것과 어리석은 것도 알기 위해 내 마음을 쏟았으나 이것도 영을 괴롭게 하는 것인 줄을 내가 깨달았도다. 17. And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.
18. 지혜가 많으면 근심도 많나니 지식을 늘리는 자는 슬픔을 늘리느니라. 18. For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
1. 내가 내 마음속으로 이르기를, 자, 이제 내가 너를 희락으로 시험할 터인즉 쾌락을 즐기라, 하였으되, 보라, 이것도 헛되도다. 1. I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.
2. 내가 웃음을 가리켜 이르기를, 그것은 미친 것이라, 하였고 희락을 가리켜 이르기를, 그것이 무엇을 하는가? 하였도다. 2. I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?
3. 내가 여전히 내 마음으로 하여금 지혜를 알게 하면서 내 마음속으로 내 자신을 포도주에 내주기를 구하였으며 또 사람들의 아들들이 그들의 평생 동안 하늘 아래에서 행하여야 할 일 곧 그들에게 그토록 좋은 일이 무엇인지 알아볼 때까지 어리석음을 붙잡기를 구하였노라. 3. I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.
4. 내가 나를 위하여 큰일들을 벌였나니 곧 내가 나를 위하여 집들을 짓고 나를 위하여 포도원들을 세웠으며 4. I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards:
5. 나를 위하여 정원들과 과수원들을 만들어 그 안에 온갖 열매 맺는 나무들을 심었고 5. I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits:
6. 나를 위하여 물 연못들을 만들어 그것들로 나무를 내는 숲에 물을 주게 하였으며 6. I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees:
7. 나를 위하여 남종들과 여종들을 구하였고 내 집에서 종들이 태어나게 하였으며 또한 내가 나보다 먼저 예루살렘에 있던 모든 사람들보다 크고 작은 가축들을 더 많이 소유하였고 7. I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:
8. 또 나를 위하여 은과 금과 왕들이 소유한 특이한 보물과 여러 지방의 특이한 보물을 모았으며 나를 위하여 노래하는 남자들과 노래하는 여자들을 두었고 또 악기와 같이 사람들의 아들들이 기뻐하는 것과 온갖 종류의 기뻐하는 것을 두었노라. 8. I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.
9. 이처럼 내가 위대한 자가 되어 나보다 먼저 예루살렘에 있던 모든 사람들보다 더 번창하게 되었고 내 지혜 또한 내게 남아 있었도다. 9. So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.
10. 또 무엇이든지 내 눈이 원하는 것들을 내가 금하지 아니하였고 내 마음이 어떤 기쁨이라도 누리는 것을 내가 막지 아니하였으니 이는 내 마음이 내 모든 수고를 기뻐하였기 때문이라. 이것이 내 모든 수고로 인하여 얻은 내 몫이었노라. 10. And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.
11. 그때에 내가 내 손이 이룩한 모든 일과 내가 수고하여 행한 모든 수고의 열매를 바라보았는데, 보라, 모든 것이 헛되며 영을 괴롭게 하는 것이요, 해 아래에는 아무 유익이 없었도다. 11. Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.
12. ¶ 내가 내 자신을 돌이켜 지혜와 미친 것과 어리석음을 살펴보았나니 왕 뒤에 오는 사람이 무슨 일을 행할 수 있으리요? 이미 행한 일뿐이리라. 12. ¶ And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.
13. 그때에 내가 보니 지혜가 어리석음보다 뛰어남이 빛이 어둠보다 뛰어남 같았도다. 13. Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.
14. 지혜로운 자의 눈은 그의 머리 속에 있거니와 어리석은 자는 어둠 속에 다니나니 그들 모두에게 한 가지 일이 일어나는 줄을 내가 직접 깨달았도다. 14. The wise man's eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.
15. 그때에 내가 내 마음속으로 이르기를, 어리석은 자에게 일어나는 일이 내게도 일어나거늘 어찌하여 내가 더 지혜로웠던가? 하고 이에 또 내 마음속으로 이르기를, 이것도 헛되도다, 하였도다. 15. Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.
16. 지금 있는 것이 훗날에 모두 잊힐 터이므로 지혜로운 자가 어리석은 자보다 영원히 더 기억되지 아니하나니 지혜로운 자가 어떻게 죽느냐? 어리석은 자와 같도다. 16. For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool.
17. 그러므로 내가 사는 것을 미워하였으니 이는 모든 것이 헛되며 영을 괴롭게 하는 것이므로 해 아래에서 이룩한 일이 내게 괴롭기 때문이라. 17. Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
18. ¶ 참으로 내가 해 아래에서 행한 내 모든 수고를 미워하였으니 이는 내가 그것을 내 뒤에 올 사람에게 남겨야 하기 때문이라. 18. ¶ Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.
19. 그 사람이 지혜로운 자일지 어리석은 자일지 누가 알겠느냐? 그럼에도 내가 수고하며 행한 내 모든 수고와 내가 직접 해 아래에서 지혜를 보이며 행한 내 모든 수고를 그가 관리하리니 이것도 헛되도다. 19. And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.
20. 이러므로 내가 노력하여 내 마음으로 하여금 내가 해 아래에서 행한 모든 수고를 단념하게 하였도다. 20. Therefore I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour which I took under the sun.
21. 어떤 사람이 지혜와 지식과 공평으로 수고한다 해도 그런 것으로 수고하지 아니한 사람을 위해 그의 몫으로 그것을 남겨야 하나니 이것도 헛된 것이며 큰 악이로다. 21. For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.
22. 사람이 해 아래에서 수고하며 행한 자기의 모든 수고와 자기 마음을 괴롭게 하는 것으로부터 무엇을 얻으리요? 22. For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun?
23. 그의 모든 날은 슬픔이며 그의 해산의 고통은 괴로움이니라. 참으로 그의 마음이 밤에 안식을 얻지 못하나니 이것도 헛되도다. 23. For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity.
24. ¶ 사람이 먹고 마시는 것과 스스로 수고하는 가운데 자기 혼으로 하여금 좋은 것을 즐기게 하는 것보다 더 좋은 것은 없도다. 내가 이것도 보니 그것이 하나님의 손에서 나왔도다. 24. ¶ There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.
25. 누가 나보다 더 많이 먹을 수 있으며 어느 누가 이런 일에서 나보다 더 빨리 행할 수 있으리요? 25. For who can eat, or who else can hasten hereunto, more than I?
26. 하나님께서 자신의 눈앞에서 선한 자에게는 지혜와 지식과 기쁨을 주시거니와 죄인에게는 모으고 쌓는 해산의 고통을 주사 그가 하나님 앞에서 선한 자에게 주게 하시나니 이것도 헛되며 영을 괴롭게 하는 것이로다. 26. For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
1. 하늘 아래 모든 일에는 시기가 있고 모든 목적한 것에는 때가 있도다. 1. To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
2. 날 때가 있고 죽을 때가 있으며 심을 때가 있고 심은 것을 뽑을 때가 있으며 2. A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
3. 죽일 때가 있고 고칠 때가 있으며 무너뜨릴 때가 있고 세울 때가 있으며 3. A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4. 울 때가 있고 웃을 때가 있으며 애곡할 때가 있고 춤출 때가 있으며 4. A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5. 돌들을 버릴 때가 있고 돌들을 함께 모을 때가 있으며 껴안을 때가 있고 껴안는 것을 금할 때가 있으며 5. A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6. 얻을 때가 있고 잃을 때가 있으며 지킬 때가 있고 버릴 때가 있으며 6. A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
7. 찢을 때가 있고 꿰맬 때가 있으며 잠잠할 때가 있고 말할 때가 있으며 7. A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8. 사랑할 때가 있고 미워할 때가 있으며 전쟁할 때가 있고 화평할 때가 있도다. 8. A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
9. 일하는 자가 자기가 수고하는 것에서 무슨 유익을 얻으리요? 9. What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth?
10. 하나님께서 사람들의 아들들에게 해산의 고통을 주사 그 안에서 단련 받게 하신 것을 내가 보았노라. 10. I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it.
11. 그분께서 자신의 때에 모든 것을 아름답게 만드셨고 또 그들의 마음속에 세상을 정하여 두셨으므로 아무도 하나님께서 만드시는 일을 처음부터 끝까지 알아 낼 수 없도다. 11. He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.
12. 사람이 사는 동안에 기뻐하는 것과 선을 행하는 것 외에 그들 안에 다른 선한 것이 없는 줄을 내가 알며 12. I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life.
13. 또 모든 사람이 먹고 마시며 자기의 모든 수고로 인한 좋은 것을 누려야 하는 것이 하나님의 선물인 줄도 아노라. 13. And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.
14. 내가 알거니와 무엇이든지 하나님께서 행하시는 것은 영원하리라. 그것에 무엇을 더하거나 그것에서 무엇을 뺄 수 없나니 하나님께서 그것을 행하시는 것은 사람들이 자신 앞에서 두려워하게 하려 하심이라. 14. I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.
15. 지금까지 있던 것이 지금 있으며 앞으로 있을 것도 이미 있었나니 하나님은 이미 지나간 것을 요구하시느니라. 15. That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.
16. ¶ 또 내가 해 아래에서 재판하는 곳을 보았는데 거기에도 그 사악함이 있고 의를 행하는 곳 거기에도 그 불법이 있도다. 16. ¶ And moreover I saw under the sun the place of judgment, that wickedness was there; and the place of righteousness, that iniquity was there.
17. 내가 내 마음속으로 이르기를, 하나님께서 의로운 자와 사악한 자를 심판하시리니 이는 모든 목적한 것과 모든 일에는, 거기에는 때가 있기 때문이라, 하였도다. 17. I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.
18. 내가 내 마음속으로 사람들의 아들들의 상태에 대하여 이르기를, 하나님께서 그들을 드러내시리니 이것은 자기들이 짐승임을 그들이 보게 하려 하심이라, 하였노라. 18. I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.
19. 사람들의 아들들에게 일어나는 것이 짐승들에게 일어나나니 곧 한 가지 일이 그들에게 일어나느니라. 이것이 죽는 것 같이 저것도 죽나니 참으로 그들이 다 한 숨을 가졌도다. 그러므로 사람이 짐승보다 뛰어날 것이 없나니 이는 모든 것이 헛된 것이기 때문이로다. 19. For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.
20. 모두가 한 곳으로 가나니 모두가 흙에서 나와 모두가 다시 흙으로 돌아가거니와 20. All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.
21. 위로 올라가는 사람의 영과 땅으로 내려가는 짐승의 영을 누가 알리요? 21. Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?
22. 그러므로 사람이 자기 일들을 기뻐하는 것보다 더 나은 것이 없음을 내가 깨닫노니 이는 그것이 그의 몫이기 때문이라. 누가 그를 데려다가 그의 뒤에 어떤 일이 일어날지 보여 주겠느냐? 22. Wherefore I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?
1. 그러므로 내가 돌이켜 해 아래에서 이루어진 모든 학대를 깊이 살펴보았노니, 보라, 학대받는 자들의 눈물이라. 그들에게는 위로자가 없었도다. 그들을 학대하는 자들의 편에는 권세가 있었으나 그들에게는 위로자가 없었도다. 1. So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.
2. 그러므로 내가 아직 살아 있는 산 자들보다 이미 죽어 있는 죽은 자들을 더욱 칭송하였으니 2. Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.
3. 참으로 아직 존재하지 않은 자 곧 해 아래에서 이루어진 악한 일을 보지 못한 자가 그들 둘보다 낫도다. 3. Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
4. ¶ 내가 모든 해산의 고통과 모든 옳은 일을 다시 깊이 살펴보았는데 이것으로 인하여 사람이 자기 이웃에게 시기를 받는도다. 이것도 헛되며 영을 괴롭게 하는 것이로다. 4. ¶ Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.
5. 어리석은 자는 자기의 두 손을 함께 포개고 자기 살을 먹는도다. 5. The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.
6. 한 손에 가득하고 평온한 것이 두 손에 가득하고 해산의 고통을 겪으며 영을 괴롭게 하는 것보다 더 나으니라. 6. Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.
7. ¶ 그때에 내가 돌이켜 해 아래에서 헛된 것을 보았노라. 7. Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.
8. 한 사람이 홀로 있고 대신할 자가 없으니 참으로 그에게는 자식도 없고 형제도 없도다. 그럼에도 그의 모든 수고에는 끝이 없으며 또 그의 눈은 재물로도 만족하지 아니하고 또 그가 이르기를, 내가 누구를 위해 수고하며 내 혼에게서 좋은 것을 빼앗는가? 하지도 아니하나니 이것도 헛되며 참으로 쓰라린 해산의 고통이로다. 8. There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.
9. ¶ 두 사람이 한 사람보다 나음은 그들이 자기들의 수고로 인하여 좋은 보상을 받기 때문이라. 9. ¶ Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.
10. 혹시 그들이 넘어지면 한 사람이 자기 동료를 일으켜 세우려니와 홀로 있는 자는 넘어질 때에 화가 있으리니 그를 도와서 일으킬 다른 자가 그에게 없도다. 10. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.
11. 또 두 사람이 함께 누우면 그들이 따뜻하게 되거니와 사람이 어찌 홀로 따뜻할 수 있으리요? 11. Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?
12. 누가 그를 쳐서 이기면 두 사람이 그와 맞서리니 세 겹 줄은 빨리 끊어지지 아니하느니라. 12. And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
13. ¶ 가난해도 지혜로운 아이가 늙고 어리석어 더 이상 권고를 받으려 하지 아니하는 왕보다 낫도다. 13. ¶ Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.
14. 그는 통치하려고 감옥에서 나오거니와 자기의 왕권을 가지고 태어난 자는 또한 가난하게 되는도다. 14. For out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor.
15. 내가 그를 대신하여 일어 설 둘째 아이와 더불어 해 아래에서 걷는 모든 산 자들을 깊이 살펴보았는데 15. I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead.
16. 모든 백성들의 끝이 없으며 심지어 그들 전에 있던 모든 자들의 끝도 없도다. 뒤에 오는 자들도 그를 기뻐하지 아니하리니 분명히 이것도 헛되며 영을 괴롭게 하는 것이로다. 16. There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
1. 너는 하나님의 집에 갈 때에 네 발을 지키고 어리석은 자들의 희생물을 드리는 것보다 듣는 것에 더 주의를 기울이라. 그들은 자기들이 악을 행하는 줄로 생각하지 아니하느니라. 1. Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.
2. 네 입을 경솔히 열지 말며 하나님 앞에서 네 마음이 급하게 어떤 것도 말하지 못하게 할지니라. 하나님은 하늘에 계시고 너는 땅에 있나니 그런즉 네 말 수를 적게 할지니라. 2. Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.
3. 꿈은 일이 많아 생기고 어리석은 자의 목소리는 말이 많아 알려지느니라. 3. For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool's voice is known by multitude of words.
4. 네가 하나님께 서원하거든 그것을 갚는 일을 미루지 말라. 그분께서 어리석은 자들을 기뻐하지 아니하시나니 네가 서원한 것을 갚을지어다. 4. When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed.
5. 네가 서원하고 갚지 않는 것보다 서원하지 않는 것이 더 나으니라. 5. Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.
6. 네 입이 네 육체로 하여금 죄를 짓게 하지 말며 또한 너는 천사 앞에서, 그것이 실수였노라, 하지 말라. 어찌하여 하나님께서 네 목소리로 인해 분노하사 네 손으로 행한 일을 멸하셔야 하겠느냐? 6. Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?
7. 꿈이 많고 말이 많으면 헛된 것도 많게 되나니 오직 너는 하나님을 두려워할지니라. 7. For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God.
8. ¶ 만일 네가 어느 지방에서 가난한 자를 학대하는 것과 폭력으로 판단의 공의와 정의를 굽게 하는 것을 보거든 그 일에 놀라지 말라. 가장 높은 자보다 더 높으신 분께서 그것을 주목하시나니 그들보다 더 높은 자들이 있느니라. 8. ¶ If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgment and justice in a province, marvel not at the matter: for he that is higher than the highest regardeth; and there be higher than they.
9. ¶ 또한 땅이 내는 이익은 모든 사람을 위한 것이니 왕도 친히 밭에서 나는 것으로 섬김을 받느니라. 9. ¶ Moreover the profit of the earth is for all: the king himself is served by the field.
10. 은을 사랑하는 자는 은으로 만족하지 못하며 풍요를 사랑하는 자도 소득의 증대로 만족하지 못하리니 이것도 헛되도다. 10. He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.
11. 재물이 늘어나면 그것을 먹는 자들도 느나니 그것의 소유주들이 자기들의 눈으로 그것을 바라보는 것 외에 무엇이 그들에게 좋으랴? 11. When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes?
12. 수고하는 자는 적게 먹든지 많이 먹든지 잠을 달게 자거니와 부자는 풍요로우므로 잠들지 못하리로다. 12. The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.
13. 내가 해 아래에서 본 큰 악이 있는데 그것은 곧 소유주들을 위해 간직한 재물이 그들에게 해가 되는 것이라. 13. There is a sore evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept for the owners thereof to their hurt.
14. 오직 그런 재물은 악한 해산의 고통으로 말미암아 사라지나니 그가 아들은 낳되 그의 손에 아무것도 없도다. 14. But those riches perish by evil travail: and he begetteth a son, and there is nothing in his hand.
15. 그가 자기 어머니 태에서 나왔은즉 온 그대로 벌거벗은 채 돌아가고 자기의 수고한 것 중에 아무것도 손에 들고 가지 못하리니 15. As he came forth of his mother's womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, which he may carry away in his hand.
16. 이것도 큰 악이라. 모든 면에서 그가 온 그대로 가리니 바람을 얻으려고 수고한 자에게 무슨 유익이 있으리요? 16. And this also is a sore evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit hath he that hath laboured for the wind?
17. 또한 그는 평생토록 어둠 속에서 먹으며 질병과 함께 많은 슬픔과 진노가 그에게 있느니라. 17. All his days also he eateth in darkness, and he hath much sorrow and wrath with his sickness.
18. ¶ 내가 지금까지 본 것에 주목할지어다. 사람이 하나님께서 그에게 주시는 그의 삶의 모든 날 동안 먹고 마시며 해 아래에서 행하는 자기의 모든 수고의 좋은 열매를 즐기는 것이 선하고 마땅하니 이는 그것이 그의 몫이기 때문이라. 18. ¶ Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion.
19. 또한 하나님께서 각 사람에게 부와 재물을 주시고 또 그에게 그것을 먹고 그의 몫을 취하며 그의 수고한 것을 기뻐할 능력을 주셨나니 이것은 하나님의 선물이로다. 19. Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.
20. 하나님께서 그의 마음이 기뻐하는 것으로 그에게 응답하시므로 그가 자기 삶의 날들을 많이 기억하지 아니하리로다. 20. For he shall not much remember the days of his life; because God answereth him in the joy of his heart.
1. 내가 해 아래에서 본 한 가지 악이 있는데 그것은 사람들 가운데 공통적으로 있는 것이라. 1. There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:
2. 어떤 사람은 하나님께서 부와 재물과 명예를 주셨으므로 자기 혼을 위해 자기가 바라는 모든 것에 부족함이 없으나 하나님께서 그것을 먹을 능력을 그에게 주지 아니하셨으므로 낯선 자가 그것을 먹나니 이것은 헛된 것이며 그것은 악한 병이로다. 2. A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
3. ¶ 비록 사람이 백 명의 자식을 낳고 또 여러 해를 살아 그의 햇수의 날들이 많을지라도 그의 혼이 좋은 것으로 채워지지 못하고 또 그가 묻히지도 못하면 내가 말하건대 유산된 자가 그보다 나으니라. 3. ¶ If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.
4. 그는 헛되이 왔다가 어둠 속에서 떠나므로 그의 이름이 어둠으로 덮일 것이요, 4. For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.
5. 더욱이 그는 해도 보지 못하였고 아무것도 알지 못하였으므로 이 사람이 저 사람보다 더 많은 안식을 누리느니라. 5. Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other.
6. ¶ 참으로 그가 천 년을 두 번 살지라도 여전히 좋은 것을 보지 못하였으니 모든 사람이 한 곳으로 가지 아니하느냐? 6. ¶ Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?
7. 사람의 모든 수고는 그의 입을 위한 것이나 식욕은 채울 수 없느니라. 7. All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
8. 지혜로운 자가 어리석은 자보다 더 많이 가진 것이 무엇이냐? 산 자들 앞에서 걸을 줄 아는 가난한 자가 가진 것이 무엇이냐? 8. For what hath the wise more than the fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?
9. ¶ 눈으로 보는 것이 욕망으로 인해 헤매는 것보다 나으나 이것도 헛되며 영을 괴롭게 하는 것이로다. 9. ¶ Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.
10. 지금까지 존재한 것에는 이미 이름이 붙어 있고 그것이 사람이라는 것도 알려졌나니 그는 자기보다 강하신 이와 다투지 못하느니라. 10. That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.
11. ¶ 헛된 것을 증대시키는 일이 많이 있음을 보거니와 무엇이 사람을 더 낫게 만들리요? 11. ¶ Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?
12. 이 삶 곧 사람이 헛된 삶의 모든 날을 그림자처럼 보내는 삶 속에서 사람에게 무엇이 좋은지 누가 알리요? 해 아래에서 사람의 뒤를 따라 무슨 일이 있을지 누가 능히 그에게 고하리요? 12. For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
1. 좋은 이름이 귀한 향유보다 낫고 죽는 날이 사람의 태어난 날보다 나으니라. 1. A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.
2. ¶ 애곡하는 집에 가는 것이 잔칫집에 가는 것보다 나으니 이는 그것이 모든 사람의 끝이기 때문이라. 살아 있는 자는 그것을 자기 마음에 두리라. 2. ¶ It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.
3. 슬픔이 웃음보다 나으니 이는 얼굴의 슬픔으로 인하여 마음이 더 나아지기 때문이라. 3. Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.
4. 지혜로운 자의 마음은 애곡하는 집에 있으나 어리석은 자들의 마음은 희락하는 집에 있느니라. 4. The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
5. 지혜로운 자의 책망을 듣는 것이 어리석은 자들의 노래를 듣는 것보다 사람에게 나으니라. 5. It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
6. 가시나무가 솥 밑에서 우지직 소리를 내는 것처럼 어리석은 자의 웃음도 그와 같나니 이것도 헛되니라. 6. For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.
7. ¶ 참으로 학대는 지혜로운 자를 미치게 하며 뇌물은 마음을 파멸시키느니라. 7. ¶ Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.
8. 일의 끝이 일의 시작보다 낫고 영 안에서 참는 자가 영 안에서 교만한 자보다 나으니 8. Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
9. 네 영이 조급하여 분노하지 말라. 분노는 어리석은 자들의 품에 머무느니라. 9. Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.
10. 너는 이르기를, 이전의 날들이 이 날들보다 더 나은 이유가 무엇이냐? 하지 말라. 네가 이것에 대하여 지혜롭게 묻지 아니하느니라. 10. Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.
11. ¶ 지혜는 상속 재산과 더불어 좋은 것이니 해를 쳐다보는 자들에게는 그것을 통하여 유익이 있도다. 11. ¶ Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.
12. 지혜는 방벽이며 돈은 방벽이니라. 그러나 지식의 뛰어난 점은 지혜가 그것을 소유한 자들에게 생명을 준다는 것이니라. 12. For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.
13. 하나님의 일을 깊이 생각해 보라. 그분께서 굽게 하신 것을 누가 능히 곧게 하겠느냐? 13. Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?
14. 형통하는 날에는 기뻐하되 역경을 당하는 날에는 깊이 생각하라. 하나님께서 또한 이것과 저것을 마주보게 두신 것은 사람이 자기 뒤에 일어날 일을 찾지 못하게 하려 하심이로다. 14. In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.
15. 나의 허무한 날들 속에서 내가 모든 일을 보았는데 자기의 의로움 속에서 망하는 의인이 있고 자기의 사악함 속에서 자기 생명을 길게 하는 사악한 자가 있도다. 15. All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.
16. 지나치게 의로운 자가 되지도 말며 스스로 지나치게 지혜로운 자가 되지도 말라. 어찌하여 네가 네 자신을 멸하려 하느냐? 16. Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?
17. 너는 지나치게 사악한 자가 되지도 말며 어리석은 자가 되지도 말라. 어찌하여 네가 네 때가 이르기도 전에 죽으려 하느냐? 17. Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?
18. 네가 이것을 붙잡고 참으로 네 손을 이것에서 거두지 아니하는 것이 좋으니 하나님을 두려워하는 자는 그것들 모두에서 벗어나리라. 18. It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.
19. 지혜가 지혜로운 자를 도시 안에 있는 열 명의 용사보다 더 강하게 하느니라. 19. Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.
20. 선을 행하고 죄를 짓지 않는 의인은 땅 위에 하나도 없느니라. 20. For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
21. 또한 사람들이 하는 모든 말에 주의를 기울이지 말라. 네 종이 너를 저주하는 것을 네가 들을까 염려하노라. 21. Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:
22. 너도 그와 같이 다른 사람들을 저주하였음을 네 마음도 종종 아느니라. 22. For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.
23. ¶ 내가 이 모든 것을 지혜로 시험하였으며 또 이르기를, 내가 지혜로운 자가 되리라, 하였으나 지혜는 내게서 멀리 있었도다. 23. ¶ All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.
24. 멀리 있고 지극히 깊은 것을 누가 능히 찾아내리요? 24. That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?
25. 내가 내 마음을 기울여 지혜와 사물의 이치를 알고 탐구하여 찾아내려 하였으며 또 어리석은 짓 곧 어리석은 것과 심지어 미친 것의 사악함을 알고자 하였는데 25. I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:
26. 마음이 올가미와 그물 같고 두 손이 묶는 띠 같은 여자가 죽음보다 더 쓴 것을 내가 알게 되었도다. 누구든지 하나님을 기쁘게 하는 자는 그녀에게서 벗어나려니와 죄인은 그녀에게 붙잡히리로다. 26. And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.
27. 선포자가 이르되, 보라, 내가 하나씩 하나씩 세어가며 전말을 알아내어 이것을 알게 되었노라. 27. Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:
28. 내 혼이 아직도 찾고 있으나 내가 알아내지 못한 것이 이것이라. 곧 내가 천 명 가운데서 한 남자를 찾았으나 그 모든 사람들 가운데서 여자는 한 명도 찾지 못하였느니라. 28. Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
29. 보라, 내가 발견한 것은 오직 이것이니 곧 하나님은 사람을 곧바르게 만드셨으나 그들이 많은 창안물을 찾아냈다는 것이라. 29. Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
1. 누가 지혜로운 사람과 같으냐? 누가 사물에 대한 해석을 아느냐? 사람의 지혜는 그의 얼굴을 빛나게 하나니 그의 얼굴의 뻔뻔함이 변하리라. 1. Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.
2. 내가 네게 권고하노니 왕의 명령을 지키고 하나님께 대한 맹세를 중히 여기라. 2. I counsel thee to keep the king's commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.
3. 그의 눈앞에서 벗어나려고 서두르지 말며 악한 것 가운데 서지 말라. 그는 무엇이든지 자기를 기쁘게 하는 것을 행하느니라. 3. Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him.
4. 왕의 말씀이 있는 곳에 권능이 있나니 누가 왕에게 이르기를, 왕께서 무엇을 하시나이까? 할 수 있으랴? 4. Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?
5. 누구든지 명령을 지키는 자는 악한 일에 손을 대지 아니하리니 지혜로운 사람의 마음은 때와 판단을 분별하느니라. 5. Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerneth both time and judgment.
6. ¶ 모든 목적한 것에는 때와 판단이 있으므로 그런 까닭에 사람의 불행이 그에게 크게 임하나니 6. ¶ Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him.
7. 그는 앞으로 무슨 일이 있을지 알지 못하느니라. 언제 그 일이 있을지 누가 그에게 말하겠느냐? 7. For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?
8. 영을 다스리는 권능이 있어 영을 머무르게 할 사람이 없고 죽는 날에 권능을 가진 사람도 없으며 그 전쟁에서는 면제받는 것도 없나니 사악함도 자기에게 넘겨진 자들을 건져 내지 못하리로다. 8. There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
9. 내가 이 모든 것을 보며 해 아래에서 이루어진 모든 일에 내 마음을 기울인즉 한 사람이 다른 사람을 다스리면서 자기를 해치는 때가 있도다. 9. All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt.
10. 이처럼 내가 사악한 자들이 묻히는 것을 보았도다. 그들은 왔다가 거룩한 자의 처소를 떠났으며 또 자기들이 그렇게 행한 도시에서 잊혔나니 이것도 헛되도다. 10. And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity.
11. 악한 일에 대한 판결이 신속히 집행되지 아니하므로 그런 까닭에 사람들의 아들들의 마음이 악을 행하려고 그들의 속에서 완전히 고정되었도다. 11. Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
12. ¶ 비록 죄인이 백 번 악을 행하고 그의 날들이 길게 된다 할지라도 내가 확실히 아노니 하나님을 두려워하는 자들 곧 그분 앞에서 두려워하는 자들은 잘되리라. 12. ¶ Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him:
13. 그러나 사악한 자는 잘되지 못하며 자기의 날들을 길게 하지 못하고 그 날들이 그림자와 같으리니 이는 그가 하나님 앞에서 두려워하지 아니하기 때문이라. 13. But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.
14. 땅에서 이루어진 헛된 것이 있나니 곧 의로운 자들이 있는데 그들에게 사악한 자들의 행위에 걸맞은 일이 일어나며 또 사악한 자들이 있는데 그들에게 의로운 자들의 행위에 걸맞은 일이 일어나는 것이라. 내가 이것도 헛되다고 말하였노라. 14. There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.
15. 이에 내가 희락을 권하였노니 사람에게는 먹고 마시고 즐거워하는 것보다 더 나은 것이 해 아래에 없도다. 하나님께서 해 아래에서 그에게 주시는 그의 삶의 날들에 그가 행하는 수고 중에서 그것이 그와 함께 있으리로다. 15. Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.
16. ¶ 내가 내 마음을 기울여서 지혜를 알고자 하였으며 또 땅에서 이루어진 일을 보고자 하였나니 (이는 낮이나 밤이나 자기 눈으로 잠을 보지 못하는 자도 있기 때문이라.) 16. ¶ When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:)
17. 그때에 내가 하나님의 모든 일을 눈여겨보고 해 아래에서 이루어진 일을 사람이 능히 알아낼 수 없음을 알았으니 이는 사람이 수고하여 그것을 찾아내려 할지라도 발견할 수 없기 때문이라. 또 참으로 지혜로운 자가 그것을 안다고 생각할지라도 능히 그것을 발견하지 못하리로다. 17. Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
1. 이 모든 것으로 인하여 내가 내 마음속으로 깊이 생각하며 이 모든 것 즉 의로운 자와 지혜로운 자와 그들이 행한 일들이 하나님의 손 안에 있다는 것을 밝히 보이려 하였노라. 아무도 자기 앞에 있는 모든 것을 통해 사랑이나 미움을 알 수 없느니라. 1. For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.
2. 모든 일이 모든 사람에게 똑같이 임하나니 곧 의로운 자와 사악한 자, 선한 자와 정결한 자와 부정한 자, 희생물을 드리는 자와 희생물을 드리지 아니하는 자에게 한 가지 일이 임하여 선한 자가 어떠함같이 죄인도 그러하며 맹세하는 자도 맹세하기를 두려워하는 자와 같으니라. 2. All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.
3. 해 아래에서 이루어진 모든 일 가운데 악한 것이 이것이니 곧 모든 사람에게 한 가지 일이 임하는 것이라. 또한 참으로 사람들의 아들들의 마음에는 악이 가득하며 그들은 사는 동안 마음속에 미친 것을 품고 있다가 그 뒤에 죽은 자들에게로 가느니라. 3. This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.
4. ¶ 살아 있는 모든 것에게 연합된 자에게 소망이 있나니 살아 있는 개가 죽은 사자보다 나으니라. 4. ¶ For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.
5. 살아 있는 자들은 자기가 죽을 것을 알거니와 죽은 자들은 아무것도 알지 못하며 다시는 보상도 받지 못하나니 이는 그들을 기억하는 일이 잊혔기 때문이로다. 5. For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
6. 또한 그들의 사랑과 미움과 시기도 이제 사라졌나니 해 아래에서 이루어진 어떤 일 중에서 그들이 차지할 몫은 더 이상 영원히 없느니라. 6. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.
7. ¶ 네 길로 가서 기쁨으로 네 빵을 먹고 즐거운 마음으로 네 포도즙을 마시라. 하나님께서 이제 네가 행하는 일들을 받으시느니라. 7. ¶ Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.
8. 네 옷을 항상 희게 하고 네 머리에 향유가 부족하지 아니하게 할지어다. 8. Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.
9. 네 헛된 삶의 모든 날 곧 그분께서 해 아래에서 네게 주신 네 모든 헛된 날에 네가 사랑하는 아내와 함께 즐겁게 살지어다. 그것은 이 삶 속에서, 네가 해 아래에서 행하는 수고 중에서 네가 받을 몫이니라. 9. Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.
10. 무엇이든지 네 손이 해야 할 일을 얻는 대로 네 힘으로 그것을 하라. 네가 가게 될 무덤 속에는 일도 없고 계획도 없고 지식도 없고 지혜도 없느니라. 10. Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.
11. ¶ 내가 돌이켜 해 아래에서 보니 경주가 빠른 자들에게 돌아가지 아니하고 전투가 강한 자들에게 돌아가지 아니하며 빵이 지혜로운 자들에게 돌아가지 아니하고 재물이 명철한 자들에게 돌아가지 아니하며 호의가 재능 있는 자들에게 돌아가지 아니하고 오직 때와 기회는 그들 모두에게 생기느니라. 11. ¶ I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.
12. 사람도 자기 때를 알지 못하나니 물고기들이 재난의 그물에 걸리고 새들이 올무에 걸림같이 사람들의 아들들도 재난의 때에 그것이 그들에게 갑자기 닥치면 올무에 걸리느니라. 12. For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.
13. ¶ 내가 또 해 아래에서 이 지혜를 보았는데 그것이 내게는 크게 보였노라. 13. ¶ This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:
14. 조그만 도시 곧 안에 사람이 많지 않은 도시가 있었는데 그것을 치려고 위대한 왕이 와서 그것을 포위하고 큰 보루를 쌓아 그것을 치고자 하였으나 14. There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:
15. 이제 그 안에 가난하지만 지혜로운 자가 있어서 그가 자기 지혜로 그 도시를 건졌도다. 그럼에도 아무도 그 가난한 자를 기억하지 아니하였도다. 15. Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.
16. 그러므로 내가 이르기를, 지혜가 힘보다 나을지라도 가난한 자의 지혜는 멸시를 받고 그의 말들은 사람들이 듣지 아니한다, 하였노라. 16. Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.
17. 지혜로운 자들의 말들은 어리석은 자들 가운데서 다스리는 자의 외침보다 조용히 더 잘 들리느니라. 17. The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.
18. 지혜가 전쟁 무기보다 나으나 죄인 하나가 많은 선한 것을 파괴시키느니라. 18. Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.
1. 죽은 파리들이 약제사의 향유에서 지독한 냄새가 나게 만드는 것 같이 작은 어리석음도 지혜와 명예로 명성을 얻은 자를 그렇게 만드느니라. 1. Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.
2. 지혜로운 자의 마음은 그의 오른손에 있으나 어리석은 자의 마음은 그의 왼손에 있느니라. 2. A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left.
3. 참으로 또한 어리석은 자는 길을 걸을 때에 그의 지혜가 소용이 없어서 그는 자기가 어리석은 자라고 모든 사람에게 말하느니라. 3. Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.
4. 만일 치리자의 영이 너를 치려고 일어나거든 네 자리를 떠나지 말라. 굴복하는 것이 크게 성내는 것을 진정시키느니라. 4. If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences.
5. 내가 해 아래에서 본 한 가지 악이 있는데 그것은 치리자에게서 나오는 실수와 같은 것이라. 5. There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceedeth from the ruler:
6. 어리석은 짓이 크게 존경을 받으며 부자들이 낮은 자리에 앉아 있도다. 6. Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.
7. 종들이 말 위에 타고 통치자들이 종들처럼 땅 위를 걸어 다니는 것을 내가 보았노라. 7. I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.
8. 구덩이를 파는 자는 거기 빠질 것이요, 누구든지 울타리를 허는 자는 뱀에게 물리리로다. 8. He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
9. 누구든지 돌들을 옮기는 자는 그것들로 말미암아 해를 당할 것이요, 나무를 쪼개는 자는 그것으로 말미암아 위험을 당하리로다. 9. Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby.
10. 쇠가 무디어졌는데도 사람이 날을 갈지 아니하면 그가 반드시 더 많은 힘을 들여야 하거니와 지혜는 지도하는 일에 유익하니라. 10. If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.
11. 뱀은 마술이 없으면 틀림없이 물리니 서투른 말쟁이도 이보다 낫지 아니하니라. 11. Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.
12. 지혜로운 사람의 입의 말들은 은혜로우나 어리석은 자의 입술은 그를 삼키려 하나니 12. The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.
13. 그의 입의 말들의 시작은 어리석음이요, 그의 대화의 끝은 해를 끼치는 미친 것이로다. 13. The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness: and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.
14. 또한 어리석은 자는 말도 많으니라. 사람은 앞으로 무슨 일이 있을지 알 수 없나니 그의 뒤에 무슨 일이 있을지 누가 그에게 알려 주겠느냐? 14. A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?
15. 어리석은 자들의 수고는 그들 모두를 지치게 하나니 그는 어떻게 도시로 가는 줄도 알지 못하느니라. 15. The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.
16. ¶ 오 땅이여, 네 왕이 아이이며 네 통치자들이 아침에 먹으면 네게 화가 있으리로다! 16. ¶ Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!
17. 오 땅이여, 네 왕이 고귀한 자들의 아들이며 네 통치자들이 술 취하려 함이 아니라 힘을 얻으려고 정한 때에 먹으면 네게 복이 있으리로다! 17. Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
18. ¶ 심한 게으름으로 말미암아 건물이 썩으며 손이 놀므로 집이 뚫려 새느니라. 18. ¶ By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.
19. ¶ 잔치는 웃음을 위해 베풀며 포도즙은 즐겁게 하되 돈은 모든 것에 쓸모가 있느니라. 19. ¶ A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things.
20. ¶ 왕을 저주하지 말되 네 생각 속에서도 말며 네 침실에서 부자를 저주하지 말라. 공중의 새가 그 소리를 전하고 날개 가진 것이 그 일을 말하리로다. 20. ¶ Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
1. 네 빵을 물들 위에 던지라. 여러 날 뒤에 네가 그것을 찾으리라. 1. Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days.
2. 일곱에게 또 여덟에게 몫을 주라. 무슨 재앙이 땅 위에 임할지 네가 알지 못하느니라. 2. Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.
3. 구름들이 비로 가득하면 땅 위에 쏟아져 스스로를 비우며 나무가 남쪽으로나 북쪽으로나 쓰러지면 그 나무가 쓰러지는 곳에, 거기에 그것이 있으리로다. 3. If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth: and if the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be.
4. 바람을 살피는 자는 씨를 뿌리지 못할 것이요, 구름들을 주목하는 자는 거두지 못하리로다. 4. He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap.
5. 영의 길이 무엇인지 또 아이 밴 여자의 태 속에서 뼈들이 어떻게 자라는지 네가 알지 못하는 것 같이 모든 것을 만드시는 하나님의 일들도 네가 알지 못하느니라. 5. As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all.
6. 아침에 네 씨를 뿌리고 저녁에 네 손을 금하지 말라. 이것이 잘 될지 저것이 잘 될지 혹은 그것들 둘 다 똑같이 좋을지 네가 알지 못하느니라. 6. In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.
7. ¶ 진실로 빛은 달콤한 것이요, 눈으로 해를 바라보는 것은 즐거운 일이로다. 7. ¶ Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun:
8. 그러나 사람이 여러 해를 살며 그 모든 해를 기뻐할지라도 어두운 날들이 많을 터인즉 그런 날들을 기억할지로다. 다가오는 모든 것은 헛되도다. 8. But if a man live many years, and rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many. All that cometh is vanity.
9. ¶ 오 청년이여, 네 젊은 때를 기뻐하라. 네 젊은 시절에 네 마음이 너를 기쁘게 하고 네 마음이 원하는 길들로 걸으며 네 눈이 보는 대로 걸으라. 그러나 이 모든 일들로 인하여 하나님께서 너를 심판 자리로 데려가실 줄 너는 알라. 9. ¶ Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.
10. 그러므로 슬픔을 네 마음에서 제거하며 악을 네 육체에서 치우라. 어릴 때와 젊을 때는 헛된 것이니라. 10. Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.
1. 이제 네 젊은 시절에 네 [창조자]를 기억하라. 곧 재난의 날들이 이르기 전에 혹은 네가 말하기를, 내가 이 해들을 기뻐하지 아니하노라, 하는 그런 해들이 가까이 이르기 전에 1. Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;
2. 해와 빛과 달과 별들이 어두워지기 전에 혹은 비가 온 뒤에 구름들이 되돌아오기 전에 기억하라. 2. While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:
3. 그 날에는 집을 지키는 자들이 떨며 강한 자들이 자신을 구부리고 맷돌 가는 자들이 적으므로 그치며 창문들로 내다보는 자들이 어두워지리라. 3. In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,
4. 또 맷돌 가는 소리가 낮아질 때에 문들이 거리에서 닫히며 새 소리에 그가 일어나고 음악 하는 모든 딸들이 쇠하게 되리라. 4. And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;
5. 또한 그들이 높이 있는 것을 무서워하며 두려움들이 길에 있고 아몬드나무가 무성하며 메뚜기가 짐이 되고 욕구가 그치리로다. 이는 사람이 멀리 있는 자기 집으로 돌아가며 애곡하는 자들이 거리들로 다니기 때문이로다. 5. Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:
6. 혹은 은줄이 풀리고 금 그릇이 깨지고 물 항아리가 샘에서 깨지고 바퀴가 물 저장고에서 깨지기 전에 기억할지니 6. Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.
7. 그때에 흙은 전에 있던 대로 땅으로 돌아가며 영은 그것을 주신 하나님께로 돌아가리로다. 7. Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
8. ¶ 선포자가 말하노니, 헛되고 헛되며 모든 것이 헛되도다. 8. ¶ Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.
9. 또한 선포자는 지혜로우므로 여전히 백성에게 지식을 가르쳤고 참으로 그는 크게 주의를 기울이고 탐구하여 많은 잠언을 정리하였노라. 9. And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.
10. 선포자는 애를 써서 받아들일 만한 말씀들을 찾았는데 여기 기록된 것은 올바른 것이요 곧 진리의 말씀들이로다. 10. The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.
11. 지혜로운 자들의 말씀들은 가시 채들 같고 집회의 스승들이 굳게 박은 못들 같나니 이것들은 한 목자께서 주신 것이니라. 11. The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.
12. 내 아들아, 또한 이 말씀들로 권고를 받으라. 많은 책을 짓는 것은 끝이 없고 많이 공부하는 것은 육체를 피곤하게 하느니라. 12. And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.
13. ¶ 우리가 전체 일의 결론을 들을지니 하나님을 두려워하고 그분의 명령들을 지킬지어다. 이것이 사람의 온전한 의무이니라. 13. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
14. 하나님께서 모든 은밀한 일과 더불어 선한 일이든 악한 일이든 모든 일을 심판하시리라. 14. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
