1장

 

1. 이제 {주}의 말씀이 아밋대의 아들 요나에게 임하니라. 이르시되, 1. Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

2. 일어나 저 큰 도시 니느웨로 가서 그것을 향하여 외치라. 그들의 사악함이 내 앞에 이르렀느니라, 하시니라. 2. Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

3. 그러나 요나가 {주}의 앞을 떠나 다시스로 도망하려고 일어나 욥바로 내려가서 다시스로 가는 배를 만나매 이에 그가 {주}의 앞을 떠나 그들과 함께 다시스로 가려고 뱃삯을 내고 그 안으로 들어가니라. 3. But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

4. ¶ 그러나 {주}께서 큰 바람을 바다로 보내시매 바다에 강력한 폭풍이 일어나서 그 배가 거의 부서지게 되었으므로 4. ¶ But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

5. 이에 선원들이 두려워하여 저마다 자기 신에게 부르짖으며 또 배를 가볍게 하려고 그 안에 있던 물건들을 바다로 던지니라. 그러나 요나는 뱃전으로 내려가서 누워 곧 잠이 드니라. 5. Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

6. 그러므로 선장이 그에게 가서 그에게 이르되, 오 잠자는 자여, 어찌 된 일이냐? 일어나 네 하나님을 부르라. 혹시 하나님이 우리를 생각하시면 우리가 망하지 아니하리라, 하니라. 6. So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.

7. 또 그들이 저마다 자기 동료에게 이르되, 오라, 우리가 제비를 뽑아 이 재앙이 누구로 인하여 우리에게 임하였는지 알아보자, 하고 이처럼 제비를 뽑으니 제비가 요나에게 떨어지니라. 7. And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

8. 이에 그들이 그에게 이르되, 원하건대 이 재앙이 누구로 인하여 우리에게 임하였는지 우리에게 말하라. 네 직업은 무엇이냐? 너는 어디서 왔느냐? 네 나라는 어디냐? 너는 어느 나라 백성이냐? 하니 8. Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?

9. 그가 그들에게 이르되, 나는 히브리 사람으로 바다와 육지를 만드신 {주} 곧 하늘의 하나님을 두려워하노라, 하니라. 9. And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land.

10. 그때에 요나가 그 사람들에게 말하였으므로 그들이 그가 {주}의 앞을 떠나 도망한 것을 알고 심히 두려워하며 그에게 이르되, 네가 어찌하여 이 일을 행하였느냐? 하니라. 10. Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.

11. ¶ 바다가 움직이며 사나워지므로 그때에 그들이 그에게 이르되, 우리가 네게 어떻게 하여야 바다가 우리를 위해 잔잔하겠느냐? 하니 11. ¶ Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.

12. 그가 그들에게 이르되, 나를 들어 바다에 던지라. 그리하면 바다가 너희를 위해 잔잔하리라. 나로 인하여 이 큰 폭풍이 너희에게 임한 줄을 내가 아노라, 하니라. 12. And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.

13. 그럼에도 불구하고 그 사람들이 힘써 노를 저어 배를 육지로 가져가려 하였으나 바다가 움직이며 그들을 향해 사나워지므로 능히 하지 못하더라. 13. Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.

14. 그러므로 그들이 {주}께 부르짖어 이르되, 오 {주}여, 주께 간청하고 간청하오니 이 사람의 생명으로 인하여 우리가 망하지 않게 하옵소서. 무죄한 피를 우리에게 돌리지 마옵소서. 오 {주}여, 주께서는 친히 기뻐하시는 대로 행하셨나이다, 하고 14. Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.

15. 이처럼 요나를 들어 바다에 던지니 바다가 격렬히 뛰놀기를 그치매 15. So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.

16. 그때에 그 사람들이 {주}를 심히 두려워하여 {주}께 희생물을 드리고 서원을 하였더라. 16. Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows.

17. ¶ 이제 {주}께서 이미 큰 물고기를 예비하사 요나를 삼키게 하시매 요나가 밤낮으로 사흘 동안 그 물고기 배 속에 있었더라. 17. ¶ Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

 

 

2장

 

1. 그때에 요나가 물고기 배 속에서 {주} 자기 하나님께 기도하며 1. Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly,

2. 이르되, 내가 내 고난으로 인하여 {주}께 부르짖었더니 그분께서 내 말을 들으셨고 내가 지옥의 배 속에서 부르짖었더니 주께서 내 목소리를 들으셨나이다. 2. And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.

3. 주께서 나를 깊음 속으로, 바다들 한가운데로 던지셨으므로 넘치는 큰물이 나를 에워쌌고 주의 모든 큰 물결과 파도가 내 위에 넘쳤나이다. 3. For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.

4. 그때에 내가 말하기를, 내가 주의 눈앞에서 쫓겨났을지라도 다시 주의 거룩한 전을 바라보리이다, 하였나이다. 4. Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.

5. 물들이 나를 에워싸되 혼까지 에워쌌으며 깊음이 나를 둘러막고 해초가 내 머리를 감쌌나이다. 5. The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.

6. 내가 산들의 밑바닥까지 내려갔으며 땅이 자기 빗장들과 함께 영원히 내 곁에 있었사오나, 오 {주} 내 하나님이여, 주께서 내 생명을 썩음에서 끌어올리셨나이다. 6. I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.

7. 내 혼이 내 속에서 기진할 때에 내가 {주}를 기억하였더니 내 기도가 주께 이르렀으며 주의 거룩한 전에 이르렀나이다. 7. When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.

8. 거짓되고 헛된 것들을 준수하는 자들은 자기들의 긍휼을 버리오나 8. They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

9. 나는 감사의 목소리로 주께 희생물을 드리며 내가 서원한 것을 갚겠나이다. 구원은 {주}께 속하나이다, 하니라. 9. But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.

10. ¶ {주}께서 그 물고기에게 말씀하시매 물고기가 요나를 육지에 토하여 내니라. 10. ¶ And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

 

 

3장

 

1. {주}의 말씀이 두 번째 요나에게 임하니라. 이르시되, 1. And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying,

2. 일어나 저 큰 도시 니느웨로 가서 내가 네게 명한바 그 선포할 것을 그곳에 선포하라, 하시매 2. Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.

3. 이에 요나가 {주}의 말씀대로 일어나 니느웨로 가니라. 이제 니느웨는 사흘 길을 다닐 만큼 심히 큰 도시더라. 3. So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.

4. 비로소 요나가 그 도시로 들어가 하루 동안 다니며 외쳐 이르되, 이제 사십 일이 지나면 니느웨가 무너지리라, 하였더라. 4. And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

5. ¶ 이에 니느웨 백성이 하나님을 믿고 금식을 선포하며 그들 중에 가장 큰 자로부터 가장 작은 자에 이르기까지 굵은 베옷을 입었고 5. ¶ So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.

6. 말이 니느웨 왕에게 이르매 그가 자기 왕좌에서 일어나 자기 몸에서 옷을 벗어 내려놓고는 굵은 베옷으로 몸을 덮고 재 속에 앉았더라. 6. For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

7. 또 그가 왕과 왕의 고관들의 칙령으로 니느웨 전역에 선포하고 널리 알리게 하며 이르되, 사람이나 짐승이나 가축 떼나 양 떼나 어떤 것도 맛보지 말지니라. 그들이 먹지도 말고 물을 마시지도 말며 7. And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:

8. 사람과 짐승이 굵은 베옷을 입고 힘써 하나님께 부르짖으며 참으로 그들이 각각 자기의 악한 길과 자기 손의 폭력에서 떠날지니라. 8. But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.

9. 하나님께서 돌아서시고 뜻을 돌이키사 자신의 맹렬한 분노에서 떠나심으로 우리가 멸망하지 아니할지 누가 알겠느냐? 하니라. 9. Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?

10. ¶ 하나님께서 그들이 행한 일 곧 그들이 자기들의 악한 길에서 돌이킨 것을 보시고 재앙 즉 친히 그들에게 행하리라고 말씀하신 그 재앙에서 하나님께서 뜻을 돌이키사 그것을 행하지 아니하시니라. 10. ¶ And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

 

 

4장

 

1. 그러나 요나가 그 일을 심히 못마땅하게 여기고 매우 분노하여 1. But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.

2. {주}께 기도하며 이르되, 오 {주}여, 간구하오니 내가 아직 내 나라에 있을 때에 내 말이 이러하지 아니하였나이까? 그러므로 내가 먼저 다시스로 도망하였사오니 이는 주께서 은혜로우시며 긍휼이 많으시고 분노하기를 더디 하시며 큰 친절을 베푸사 재앙에서 뜻을 돌이키시는 하나님이신 줄을 내가 알았기 때문이니이다. 2. And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.

3. 오 {주}여, 그러므로 이제 간청하오니 내게서 내 생명을 취하소서. 사는 것보다 죽는 것이 내게 더 낫나이다, 하니라. 3. Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

4. ¶ 그때에 {주}께서 이르시되, 네가 분노하는 것이 잘하는 것이냐? 하시니라. 4. ¶ Then said the LORD, Doest thou well to be angry?

5. 이에 요나가 그 도시에서 나가 그 도시의 동쪽 편에 앉고 거기서 자기를 위하여 초막을 만들고는 마침내 그 도시가 어떻게 되는지 보려고 그 밑의 그늘에 앉았더라. 5. So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.

6. {주} 하나님께서 박을 예비하시고 그것이 위로 올라가 요나를 가리게 하셨으니 이것은 그것이 그의 머리 위에서 그늘이 되게 하여 그를 고통에서 건지려 하심이었더라. 이에 요나가 그 박을 심히 기뻐하니라. 6. And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.

7. 그러나 하나님께서 그 다음 날 아침이 이를 때에 벌레 한 마리를 예비하사 그것이 박을 쳐서 시들게 하시니라. 7. But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.

8. 해가 뜰 때에 하나님께서 뜨거운 동풍을 예비하셨고 또 해가 요나의 머리에 내리쬐매 그가 기진하여 스스로 죽기를 바라며 이르되, 사는 것보다 죽는 것이 내게 더 낫나이다, 하니라. 8. And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

9. 하나님께서 요나에게 이르시되, 네가 그 박으로 인하여 분노하는 것이 잘하는 것이냐? 하시니 그가 이르되, 죽는다 할지라도 내가 분노하는 것이 잘하는 것이니이다, 하니라. 9. And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.

10. 그때에 {주}께서 이르시되, 네가 수고하지도 아니하고 자라게 하지도 아니한 박 곧 하룻밤 사이에 났다가 하룻밤 사이에 없어진 그 박을 불쌍히 여겼거든 10. Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:

11. 오른손과 왼손을 분간하지 못하는 자가 십이만 명이 넘고 또 많은 가축이 있는 저 큰 도시 니느웨를 내가 아껴야 하지 아니하겠느냐? 하시니라. 11. And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
